[Bot]'s

Are those [Bot]'s something to worry about? Computer privacy is a hot topic at the moment in the US and the ways information can be used is enough to creep one out. When it comes to Google, you're not the customer, you're the product.

What is (bot)s ? Is see them at the bottom of the home page amongst the people logged in. Graeme

Proabably not much to worry about. Most of them are probably search engine Bots looking for information to update their databases.

I've switched search engines from google to yahoo in protest to googles new privacy standards. Used it once now and haven't seen any difference (still way too many links to sift through).

Apparently one in seven people were informants in East Germany before the wall came down. If they had the internet then, there would be informants spying on informants. After the wall came down and people uncovered a lot of the documents there was even a case where a guy's wife was informing on him. As if cheating wasn't bad enough. Makes me wonder how a government could afford to pay all the manpower needed to sort through it all the info. Our standard of life is on a downward spiral.

If you search on Google for anything Norton this site usually comes up. Now you know why. :mrgreen:

dits and dots may break internet bones but bike-bots is what I fear to face. Only other cycle I know of that can use straight steering advantage. Camel jockies, chest masters and quiz show experts have their digital counter parts. Later versions can pick self up and ride a horizontal path vertically upright, on a loose 45' degree slope. That is same loads as racer faces that tend to sling cycle off at a tangent. But so far, only a one trick pony, so bring em on, or off road.

I read an amusing article in the paper here about Googles new 'privacy' policies. Basically it said for all internet stuff just lie.....use a fake name for a Google account, wrong sex, age location.... if they are gathering info stuff them..... I don't have a Facebook/Google/Youtube account so I'm not too worried.....yet.
I have noticed that Ebay thinks they know what I like.... :roll:

I'm in the same boat and ebay's getting closer and closer. One of these days they're going to start bidding for me.

Here in Canada a bot controlled telemarketing service was dialing up numbers of people to inform them their polling station had moved and they were directed to a non existing polling station during the federal election. Of coarse the phone account was held by a ridiculously fictitious name so no individual can be traced however the trail did lead to a promo company used by the majority ruling conservative party. The plot thickens as the investigation continues. Wonder where they got their phone list.

Oh.. and uh, does Norton make anti bot software in ver. 750 or 850? : )

It's the data mining Bots that have me concerned. I don't care if they tailor my ads that much, but they are annoying. I've heard a couple different experts on the radio say that it's not uncommon for data to be sold to just about anybody, like insurance companies and large corporate HR departments. One example was that two similar guys could get two different insurance health quotes, one guy's on a parasail forum, the other on a RC sailboat forum. This was NPR, and it's well known they're a bunch of commie liberals. I wonder what BlueCross thinks about motorcycles with skinny tires.

If they are mining data from this site, they will conclude that most of us spend our time bitching about how these bikes were manufactured and trying to improve upon that as opposed to actually riding one. This has healthy side effects that researchers will come to acknowledge. It is well known that people tend to live long enough to finish things they are passionate about, our bikes are never done...therefore we will live forever! So your life insurance rates should drop.

Somewhat along the Bot line...

If you use Firefox for a web browser, give a try of the add-on called NoScript. There may be similar products for other browsers, I don't know since I don't use them.

As I understand it, some web sites leave behind Java scripts on your machine. These can function like a tracking cookie, except deleting cookies still leaves the scripts behind. I'm sure not all are evil tracking scripts, but I'm also just as sure that some are. For example, on this website, I allow the site script to run, but deny the googleanalytics and the youtube scripts that attempt to install.

The add-on has options like just run the script for this session and then delete, so you can have full functionality, but not have a left behind snoop (since you may want to watch one of the youttube videos hobot posted).

BTW, I use CookieCleaner (Ccleaner) to manage cookies, anything newer, better out there?

Hehe, I've fed the interweb so much digital doo-doo bots can't find squat on me but what's in the phone book, and of course my illicit affair with an imaginary gal that has lots of my fake money spent on. I'm sure a hand full of us are linked to words like Combat and Commando or nipples and bush reaming.

Btw google currently offers a delete history option which is supposed to wipe/hide past searches connected to your name and 'puter id & location and will require special Gov't or spy interest in you to find again, as long as ya don't do a 'vainity' search, ie: putting your real name in address or satellite etc searches on your 'puter.
