Good find Matt, too bad though , -that more camera time was spent on showing them smoking & whinging than on the racing..

was going to put this on the double post , as the heading here may be perhaps confuseing , that wasnt a bad idea . But its gone . :? :( therefore ,

There was a quote from one of the Norton riders - unless I misheard (quite possible) - referencing 164 MPH on the straights. Could that be right? That's some serious speed that I didn't think a modified production sort of 750 could achieve back then. Or did I hear it wrong?

Yes, it wasn`t clear if they were referring to the J.P.N.s or J.Findlays factory Suzuki TR 750, which was easily capable of doing that speed.

Seeing the 72 Bikes were timed at 155 + at Daytona , downhill ( bray ) in a straight line , theyed be faster . a book quotes 72 Ps for them , :? 76 for monocoque . And claims 174 mph for it . seeing its a Australian book , it must be right . :wink: Last Works Trident was alledged to do that , also . 1974 .

Motorcycle Racing mag ran a speed trap at the `77 TT, & recorded these figures for the "35th milestone between Creg-ny-Baa & Brandish corner"...
"Classic TT"
1, M.Grant, 750 Kaw : 190.38 mph.
2, B.Smith, 750 Yam : 184.01 mph.
3, S.Parrish, 500 Suz : 182.84 mph.
4, S.Woods, 500 Suz : 180.99 mph.
9, J.Dunlop, 351 Yamsel: 172.90 mph.
No Brit bikes in that one though.
Odd that Mick Grant ,who finished 2nd to P.Williams in that filmed `73 race wasn`t even mentioned, maybe it was his speed that was recorded?

Yes, 1973. According to Classic Racer July/August `05, Ginger Molloy,[ Kiwi `70 500 World Championship runner-up,] was, in 1973: "clocked at an incredible 172 mph down the Conrod straight" at Bathurst, on just such a production based racer, H1R 500..

Matt, P.Williams has been quoted re the monocoque - " ...drag area was 0.222 square metres" perhaps you could run that & the 76hp numbers through the speed projection formula that hobot so thoughtfully posted on the SirEddyprojectbike thread?

So the Norton team engines were 76HP? I'm curious as to what the configuration was that got them to that level? I have seen a Norton factory bulletin re some stage mods - can't recall if there were 2 or 3 stages but would that top stage have been what made them 76 HP or was that stage mod bulletin I'm thinking of essentially just a bit of a power bump for a street bike and unrelated to the race engines?

but , If you spent 200 hours polishing & fettling the engine internals , with the clearances & pre loads & settings dead right , might not be impossible .
Dunstall had inherited the Race Shop , & all tecnical development . The 750s had been run hard for years , so there was no lack of familiarity with them.
They were all the rage for 1970 .

T100 race motor from the boondocks , believed built 1960 . Had had ' a bit of time ' spent on it. youll have to chuck out the T.V. :wink:

The 76 hp figure is what Peter Williams was quoted as stating for the fully developed 73x89 mm 750 engine at the end of the '72 season. That's with lots of experiments on carbs, cams, port shapes, valve sizes, exhausts, etc. He also said that in '73 they got the 77x80.5 mm short stroke 750 up to 78 hp.
