Bikes with two engines?

thanks for spinning that one, Ken. ! couldn't do it on my photo-hosting site.

No problem, Danno. I was getting a headache trying to look at that twin Kawi upside down. A friend is trying to get me roped into building a twin Norton engined bike with him for landspeed racing, but I'm so far behind on other projects that I'm resisting. Maybe someday, if only to wind up a certain lister some more.:)

Ken, how can you turn that down?!

That would be a great project to be involved in.

I’m looking forward to your thread on it already !!

Easily, Nigel, easily. This is the same friend that talked me into building the Norton streamliner with him a few years back. He's a great guy, but his grasp of how much work is involved in these sorts of projects is, shall we say, limited:rolleyes:

Sounds like a poor excuse to me Ken....

Ah well, then. I guess I'll just have to put it in the project schedule, right after finishing the lansdspeed Norton effort for this year, and the MK3 restomod, and getting the JS monoshock bike back together, and doing something with the Hemmings Rob North Norton kit, and, of course, messing about with the new 961. Might also be some delay while I'm learning how to work with carbon fiber and playing at making titanium exhaust bits. Should be just about ready in time to celebrate my 80th birthday in 2022. The problem is, I'm always getting distracted by the next shiny object. At least here on the forum I'm not the only one with that problem.:)

Ken

How dare you bring logic into this.

It spoils all the fun...!

BTW... I have PM’d you with a partial solution...

You guys must have a lot of very liberal competition classes. In Australia, whenever we set up a race class, the first thing we do is think about what we DO NOT want running in it.

Eddie, you would think a 60 BHP 750 commando engine in a featherbed frame would be the best bike, however a good guy on a 50 BHP 500cc Manx would probably beat the pants off it. The chassis must be designed to suit the motor. I've ridden 650cc Tritons and one Manx - the latter was far superior. A Triton is only faster in a straight line - impossible to corner one as fast as a Manx The motor is usually too far back.

in a straight line unlikely it did happen – why, SS 1/4 mile was fairly big in the U K back in the 1960s-70s –double engine bikes came in first, I believe from the United States, but we had all sorts of M/Cycle engines to play about with, George Brown on his Vincent’s, Alf Hagon on his V twin JAPS e.t.c. even a little supercharged Vincent 500cc Comet called Mighty Mouse ridden by Brian Chapman which once came in at under 9 seconds- a Manx will not beat that!

If only you Aussies would be a little more liberal and broad minded, then perhaps you could have won more world championships than Jack Brabham in his own car, then maybe we wouldn’t have the likes of Mick Doohan, Casy Stoner etc having to ride Jap bikes to win world championships.

I had the rare pleasure of watching Mr. Chapman put a bunch of hopped-up, wheelie-barred 4-cylinder dragbikes on their trailers. The Comet sounded like a John Deere single-cylinder "Johnnypopper" at idle and absolutely screamed at speed. Great memory!

Australia manufactured a couple of motorcycles many years ago, but today it does not happen. We have lost most of our technology base to China. I've had friends who worked at Repco Brabham, but you are talking about another era. The closest thing to an Australian motorcycle is the Britten which was made in New Zealand and nobody seems to be making that under licence. I don't think Australians need to become more liberal, our conservative politicians have said 'people have the right to be bigots' - that is extreme freedom ? You might be right about becoming more broad minded, we are extremely parochial and inwards looking. Many of us believe Australia is the centre of the universe and everything revolves around us.
