Before I pull the cover off I thought I would just add a tag as it is too cold for the garage today.
This is the third time I have rebuilt one without a problem up to now.
With much reading in the Triumph and Haynes manual I find both giving information in two different procedures.
I went for the Haynes method and set the camplate in neutral then offering the cover with the second tooth from the top of the gearchange quadrant in line with the gearchange spindel bushing.

I had the bike running and there was no way to change a gear let alone get the usual one up and four down. When the bike was on the bench gears could be coaxed but seemed to always find an awful lot of false neutrals, I put that down to there being no oil in the box.

Ideas welcome as to the next stage.

You know that has got me thinking!

I had a five speed, this thing could actually be four speed.

Here is a bit of interesting information and I have penciled the engine No. On the page.

The box should be assembled in neutral but, before the inner cover is replaced the camplate should be rotated to the first gear position which is stated in the factory manual but Haynes omits completely.

You will have difficulty selecting "one up and four down" on a Triumph unless it's got a reverse camplate.

This bike is new to me as I had a 78/79 5 Speed with left changer before.
I must ask a silly question but what is the changing arrangment.

One down and three or four up (the standard shift pattern Triumphs had for many years) and a '74 Edit: T120V/140V should have a 5-speed gearbox.

Ok thanks L.A.B. I see what I did wrong! I assembled it in fourth gear not neutral and of course screwed the rest.

Thats what happens using too many manuals.

The link below is for is for a T160 video, but in most regards, it applies just as much to T140.

IIRC even the genuine Triumph workshop manual has an error in it regarding camplate and selector set up. I often wonder how much pain this has caused over the years?!

I have used the method shown in this video and it works perfectly:
