I was trying to get some ideas on a better sleeker looking tailight replacement for an 850 commando using the stock seat on a 1974. I was hoping to find one that will mount right on without modifying the fender or drilling it. Anyone got any ideas????

the old britts one is the only one that fits straight on that I know of. Other kinds you bolt on or mount off to the side like the kind I have for sale in the sale section.

This is the Old Brits I have on mine: http://www.oldbritts.com/17_100030.html

A single hole needs to be ovaled a wee bit. It's not one you'd notice though, should you put the original back on.
There really is no other choice without performing major surgery or side mounting.

There is a molded streamlined almost universal fit for Brit Iron tail light assemblly I see in vendor catalogs, look trick and is way more robust that factory scab on after thought light. I'd check with Fred at Old Brits Cycle for this.

Old britts tail lights wont be available till end of month due to casting flaws in last batch. Need to get on backorder list if you want one.

I don't think its unqiue to Old Brits so if can't wait might go down the long list of BI vendors to see if they have similar, with or w/o the casting flaws. LED guts are an upgrade to view too.

Seen similar but need to be notched for rear hoop. I'll look around, I need one like yesterday.

the one without the notch you're thinking of is a Bates. They're on ebay all the time

FWIW-
It is pretty simple for a TIG welder to plug the holes in a stainless fender and polish it back so you wouldn't know they are there. If you plan to paint the fender as many do these days it is even easier.

You may be able to find a NOS Bates assembly on eBay. I think these can be fitted with minimal mods. The Old Britts casting seems to be based on the original Bates housing as far as I can tell
