How many manufacturers are there of seat covers or is everyone selling the same one?

Who makes the best MK3 seat cover closest to factory appearance with the correct stitching seams and logo?

How difficult is it for one to install the cover and chrome strip, or is this best left to an upholstry professional?

If the seat pan edges are good, the foam is not out of shape, and you are careful, installing the cover is not hard. The chrome strip is easy.

You may find that the only option is to have an upholstery shop make you a cover. Here is part of a post from Wassell:

"If you have been searching for seat supply for your vintage British motorcycle as of late, you may find that many of the best-selling seats have been out of stock with many suppliers for months now. There have been some contributing factors that have left the supply chain in peril, including a general economic malaise in Europe, a closing of a major supplier in the UK, and the absence of a manufacturer of “pressings”, or seat pans.

We have used three different suppliers for seats in the past, including RK Leighton, P&P Seating Ltd, and Wassell Ltd. P&P Seating was a supplier of premium-grade reproduction seats, and once was one of the biggest manufacturer of seats for vintage BSA, Norton, and Triumph motorcycles until they closed in early 2024. We have also stocked the Wassell line of economically-priced seats, which sold well and offered a reasonable alternative to the premium-priced seats from P&P and RK Leighton."

Wassell no longer sells Norton or Triumph seats and the only BSA seat they have is for a Bantam. The Bonneville Shop has seats and covers but they list them for as right for all 850s (I don't think that is correct). https://www.thebonnevilleshop.com/p...m-and-sprags-pn-06-3676-c-60-0697-tbs-4340-r/ Their complete seats look nice and fit just OK but they don't have them for MKIII AFAIK.

Best I can tell, R K Leighton is still in business - I don't know if they sell to end users. info@rk-leighton.co.uk You could write them and see what they have to offer.

I brought a new interstate seat cover from Burtons British bikes came with all the clips and new strip when I brought a new inter solo seat with the hump so I have 2 seats, the seat cover was a easy job for me to recover the old seat and looks great same as the original seat patten with the gold Norton logo on the back, but that was 15 years ago, I have only used the dual seat 2 times since I recovered it as my bike is rego for solo rider only now.
The new cover fitted perfect and as I say comes with everything needed to do it yourself as long as the foam is still good.

I've had great results with this company.

RK Leighton are still advertising in bike mags, so I'd say they're still in business.

The pre-mk3 seats can be used on an 850 mk3. As my interstate seat (a Wassel, very good) was originally for an earlier 750, I removed the hinge from my mk3's frame and the earlier style seat fitted perfectly, held on by the knurled wheel screws. When I went back to my Roadster seat I bought the Andover Norton hinge delete kit for the seat, so now I can swap them over in a couple of minutes.

My seat pan metal and foam is in good condition. Just looking to install a new cover.
Andover and RGM are both out of stock but smaller distributors seem to have them.
Looks like stitching is correct.

Here is the seam from my original 4000 mile 75/76 bike. Unsure of the sewing terminology but looks rather seamless to me.

Are both types available now as repair parts?

I'd guess that depends on the manufacturer/supplier as there was a ribbed cover, a basket weave cover and the squared cover.

Mk3.

I've seen all the various heat embossed patterns.

The side seam appears to be used improve manufacturability (no 6' strip of cloth backed vinyl to contend with)
