Best green lane / winter bike ?

I suspect there are a few owners of the 3 you mention on here, Les ... as you know I have a Guzzi and watch Kijiji here patiently for a DR650 , for me the lowering kit offered from factory is essential , the ‘80 xl500 I had was not a challenge for my short inseam ,however all the 650 dual sports available these days are a bit too high for me .... sadly I would have to part with a bike to have a dual sport , just no room , just enough room on lift to store the ct90 I’m getting ready ....

Craig, I am under 5' 9" so even the Africa Twin is never going to be a flat foot bike (I do have the seat in the high position being for roomy) and a tank at 242 kgs.
The DR is a feather weight compared to it but I did add longer RMZ450 Showa's back in 2010.

CCM Scrambler, the latest rendition being Black something or other. Once I fitted mudguards to mine it fits the bill, less hairy than the KTM690 I had but nice and chuckable. Still requires control of the inner hooligan though .

What is a green lane? Well depends where you live but down here it is a lot of B roads! :)
Just kidding! Pretty much think of it as a rural one lane road.

We call them woods roads here , mostly built by farmers and logging folks ... or mud roads on PEI ( packed red mud) .... or gravel roads Gov. maintained .... then there are the all access trails crisscrossing our Province & entire Country ....

no first hand experience, but a mate that does ride green lanes has a Honda CRF250. small and light for the off road, and OK on the roads. ( I did once ride my T140 along a green lane. Not a good idea... but I got as far the required waypoint ).

Thanks Dave, yes I’m sure they’re fine machines, but I’ve kinda decided I want a big thumper, so 600 / 650 single kinda thing.

I agree, you should go for something like that ... so that you can get it out of your system and then get the perfect bike. A DRZ400E with acerbis tank, wide ratio gearbox, comfort seat and soft luggage, then the world is your oyster. ;)

There are a few options with the tamed Husky 610 motor, SWM, AJP or even CCM. All getting good reviews but the first 2 more off-road orientated.

Which CCM are you referring to which has a tamed Husky motor ?

The thumpertalk website is worth a look if your considering a big single. Lots of interesting info/reviews etc.
Thanks, not seen that site before. That’s gonna take a chunk of my work time today !!

Dual purpose tyres on mine but easy to go full scrambler mode.

Kommando, is that a Gold Star?

No, B44 Victor Special. A bit shorter than a Gold Star as it based on a C15 off road competition frame for UK Scrambles and 100lbs lighter.

Its a 69 with a 66 round barrel and head. Front and rear wheels are off a 1965 B40ES so a bitza but since the photo the front wheel is correct for 69 and the correct rear wheel, head and barrel are on the shelf. The round barrel and head with B40 cases will then go into a C15 road frame with a Gold Star Clubman's tank to set the purists off.

I thought it might be a Victor.
I had a buddy that would haul his 441 Victor to the various race tracks we would attend during the race season, Watkins Glen, Road Atlanta, Mid-America etc.
He took great joy in firing that very loud engine up very early in the morning after a hard night of beer consumption. Man that exhaust volume could destroy your hearing and the handle bar vibration would leave your hands tingling for days.
One morning the Victor kicked back and sent him sailing along with trashing his knee.
He received ZERO sympathy from his hung over comrades.

Due to their lack of use durning the third lockdown, some "B " roads are beging to get a covering of moss, so I guess you can call them green lanes.
