Attached photo of a layshaft bearing on a non Norton box. No parts book available
and no parts for the box are available. So no big deal just order a bearing by
size and type. Er, just what is this bearing called? Sure, it is a needle bearing but not
a Torrington. Any help here?

Needle roller.
Most likely just called "roller bearing".

Torrington Bearing Company, Torrington, Connecticut was the biggest, most prolific supplier for a long time.
Slang terminology grew from this.
"torrington bearing"

Like "Jeep" was used for any small 4x4 for a long time.
