So new build - 850 commando...shifting is a little sloppy - so hoping it might be the easy to access bits that might be worn down out of spec - especially the gearshift pawl- but wondering if you experts could advise.....

the arm of the quadrant seemed quite firm with the cover off - so hoping the play is somewhere in here....

its also a jockey shift setup - so if anyone has a line on heavier springs...that would be wicked helpful.....

thanks as always!

Replace springs! Please!

Re: Attn: Tranny Experts: Are these bits in need of replacem

thats an obvious one - what about that pawl - are the edges supposed to look like that? or should they be in-line with the curvature of it? (ie. worn down from shifting...?)

Re: Attn: Tranny Experts: Are these bits in need of replacem

Only thing I can see that I'd replace and diddle right is the old pawl head spring, which should have both legs set parallel in their section the pawl swings past. i found the distance pawl misses spring is not really a factor as manual would have ya believe, so once working but not matching the manual measure - if you try to redo a bit to match manual and get the legs a bit out of parallel > its back to square one again, ugh. A hand shifter should be easier to shift to N than foot lever, otherwise AMC should be the easiest most sure shift snicker you'll ever experience short of air shifter maybe.

Oh yeah another thing I've run into the starts to bother easy shifting is the thin 1st gear bush dissolving to pieces.

I spray paint over the outer cover parts that remain above oil level now, or risk eventually rusting away the threads of stud and such.

Acceptable backlash on a 6" lever projected out 2' will appear "sloppy". You'll need to put on your fabricators cap and make heavier springs if you want them.

Oh yes, replace the springs.

"Wicked helpful..." ?? You didn't mention you were from Bostin! North Shore?

Just bought a spring kit from Old Britts, may as well replace them all that you can get to. What does your kickstart pawl look like? That is a simple fix while your in there!
