I need to replace the main gearbox seal. I have the primary off, and the drive sprocket off.
I know the trick to insert sheet metal screws into the seal shell, but I did not want to drill holes in the metal shell for fear of getting metal chips behind the seal. I know there is an open cage bearing behind it.
So I tried to punch a hole in the shell, and was surprised to have the shell move about 1/16 inch deeper into the GB case. That is where I stopped.
Questions:
Is it possible to drive the seal into the GB case far enough to cause problems, such as moving the main shaft bearing out of position?
Does the spacer that the seal runs on slip off the main shaft, or is there a shoulder holding it on. If I can get it out, then I think I can get a purchase on the seal. But how does one get a purchase on the spacer?
While I have all the primary parts off the engine and GB, I figure I might as well replace the engine drive side main seal. Same problem .... do not want to drill into the seal shell for like reasons. Same questions apply (except there is no spacer).
What is the size and thread of the slotted security screw, that holds the security ring, that prevents the nut which holds the sprocket from coming loose? The head of that screw got boogered getting it off and I would like to replace it with a socket head cap screw.
Slick is out of slick tricks. Need a bail-out.
