I have two AA units, I need to dismantle both to make one good unit. How is this done? They are both on the bench, cannot remove the center bolt. I need to take the bob weights from one and install into the other.

The center bolt has an internal LEFT hand thread which is intended to act as a self extractor to break the AAU from the magneto shaft.

Try turning the bolt CW. If it does not come out, the LH thread is stripped which is common.
If stripped, the only way to get it out is to cut off the head.

I have 6 used magneto advance units that came with a bunch of parts I purchased years ago.

I may need to buy one. Price?
As for my existing one, once I cut the head off the bolt it will drop free from the AA unit?

It should. I see no reason why not.
I am in the same way as you, my bolt will not come out. New bolts are available, do a Google search . I have been to at least one website for a shop in the UK that rebuilds AAU's.

I cut the head off the bolt and it still won't come apart. The owner is looking towards buying a new one from RGM.

There are four rivets that hold the AAU together. These must be drilled out to get the thing apart.

Cutting off the center bolt head should allow the center bolt to come out the rear side (the magneto side).

Before cutting off the bolt head, make sure it is in the loose position i.e. it can move up and downwards about a quater of an inch.

I have 6. I can send you pictures of them and let you decide which one you would want. I won't knowingly sell you something I wouldn't use myself. They have been sitting on a shelf for the better part of 20 years, I sprayed some WD40 on them and they seem to work as designed.
Contact me off list and I will send you pictures.
