Ash is in hospital

So things are starting to move compensation wise, we will be reimbursed for our new car and mods around our house and my new leg which the CTP insurance has already paid for as they accepted their client was at fault causing our injuries so when we get together with both Debra and myself with our solicitor and the other CTP insurer to workout how much compensation will be offered and if we accept I be also putting on "plus expenses" to, so it don't all come out of our pocket with the payout, those 2 words added to the claim will save us all the hassles as my leg care will be with me for the rest of my life with my leg makers.
Tariffs/duties on the e-start kit should fall under this category, it actually is a Medical Appurtenance to resume riding.

Big day up at the hospital 9:15 the taxi turned up, 10:30 rehab finished about 11:45 but had 2 hrs to kill before going to orthopedic to get medical certificate, got their early but it wasn't till 3:30 before I got to see the doctor, he asked what I was doing here as last time I was there he said no need to come back, but told him I needed the MC for my solicitor to proceed with our claim, he was good and said, don't come back while having a bit of a laugh, so back to the transit area to come home another 40 min wait for a taxi to take me home.

On the way home a phone call I wasn't going to answer it but I did, lucky I did it was the person who going to modified our car and asked if I could get it to him in the morning Wednesday and he need to have the car for a few days as when he does the modification an engineer has to approve it by our Law but the car be ready Friday morning, if I can't do it tomorrow it be another 2 weeks as he's going on holiday for 2 weeks, so I said it will be there, the thing is its way over the other side of our city and 1/2way down the coast and getting it there in peak hour, then we have to find a way home but lucky train or bus is not far from the workshop, so Friday I have my freedom back :) 🍻.

So things are starting to move forward for us, but have to cancel rehab Friday, what a shame ;)🤣

Just got a text message from the mod workshop and the car is ready to be picked up was a quick turnaround but I had arranged my youngest daughter to take us down tomorrow Friday so I text her to see if she was free today but she is working today, as well I canceled Fridays rehab, so phoned Andy up to ask if OK to still pick the car up Friday, all good by him, didn't feel like catching 2 buses then walking to the place from the bus stop which took us a few hours busing it home yesterday where only a 40 minute drive in the car from door to door.

So a day off for us so I be up in the shed working on my train layout today as I planned, I am expanding my lay out and running more track work, it's a slow process laying and bending flex track and connecting it all, but I enjoy doing it, keeps me busy and keeps me sane and I am out of Debra's hair, we been stuck at home to long and we been at each other the last week or so, not good for both of us, but I am sure now once I am driving again I can get out and about again and have that break from each other, although she is a good woman, we are so different to each other, but that is why we stuck it out together for so long, she puts up with me and I am not a easy person to live with as I like doing things my way and Debra has her ways of doing things but she is no good at muti tasking although she thinks she is and she takes too long to do simple things and always do it the hard way, isn't marriage great, but sometime I wonder if I will get paroled soon, 35+ years together and each year the parole get rejected, looks like I am a lifer lol.

At the moment I am getting back into my trains but the bike is in my head, getting the car done so I can drive was on top of what is needed, the trains are keeping me sane, but once I settle down with driving again I am sure the ES installation won't be far off, I been so busy with rehab learning to walk again, and I am doing pretty good, and now the next stage with driving again but with all the B S I have to go through to get back on the road again and then I have to go through all the B S again before I can take the bike out again, proving to others I can do it although they can't take my licenses off me, so over all the B S I got to go through, but there is big money at stake in compensation pay out, so over it all, I just want to get back to my normal life again and money can't do that for me, I liked my simple life and ways.

Things were starting to get me down a bit, more frustration than anything, but I always said from the beginning that this year is recovery year, and we will start fresh next year, but lucky getting my new leg so quick and walking sooner than the way it could have gone as without the CTP insurer coming on board things are moving a lot quicker than it could have as going through normal health system I be waiting 12 months or more for a new leg and not have the best beg, so am grateful for that.

Jeez Ash - things to do, things to do.
You're busier than a one-legged man in a bum kicking contest! (I only just realised how apt that saying is. )
Cheers

Getting back with life is the best recovery medicine and keeping busy takes my mind off in how thing could have gone a lot worst, going up to the hospital for rehab opens my eyes that there are people worst off more than myself and Debra and we are still breathing and slowly getting on with our lives, I might be over stating things here but writing about it has helped me to get over the worst and the friendships that I have made here as well, I will get up your way soon Rob and cracking a few beers together is something I look forward too.

Ash, have you shown any pictures of your train setup? It sounds large.
It's growing and need to get a few more sheets of base board and timber to extend it a little bit more and laying the extra track at the moment and will take some pics of it on the weekend and put up here, so far have only laid track and a few building for the layout with rolling stock that I been buying the new trains are still in the boxes stashed away till ready, have the wiring to do after the tracks are all finished being laid down, I started this hobby 2 months before the accident and 7 months of not touching it I have so much more to do now to make up for those lost 7 months. as well start the ES kit install, get the old Landy fixed and ready to sell, but at the moment the trains are keeping me sane just doing things, laying the track work is the slowest as I am using flexie track so bends have to be bent into shape and cut to size for the rail joiners to match.
The layout is taking up over 1/3 of my shed, this is a long term project and will take years before it get near finished but hey I got all the time in the world now and is a bit more harder being legless all the time, I got my daughter to buy mechanics creeper for when it's time to do the wirering under the layout for the track and points, I have everything needed to do the wiring but the track work needs finishing first as a lot of dropper feed every 4 to 6 feet and they need to be solider to the track so the trains run smoothly, setting up for DCC power.

Great day driving my new car for the first time, so used to driving the old Landy Defender compared to that the Honda is luxury to me, so smooth and quiet the only noise was Debra telling me to slow down or picking on my other bad habits, its hard keeping it on the speed limit as the accelerator is so touchy, the mod pedal on the left side of the brake pedal a shaft goes to the other side and the arm sits on the original pedal, the main plate is installed to the floor and a release lever to pull the pedal away when Debra drives the car, when its connected a plate sit over the original pedal so the original pedal cannot be touched, a pretty simple set up, I usually take my leg off when I am driving but was at a mates place just down the road and I drove home with my peg leg fitted and worked alright, so be up to me if I take it off or not.
I am not suppose to be driving it till I had finished with the assessment of my driving skill using my left foot and getting a restriction to my license, but fu ck them I still have my license and I am so over all the B S I have to go through, what they don't know won't hurt them, my freedom is more important, but it was so good driving my own car even if it's all new to me.
My mate is taking me out in the morning to pick up 3 sheets of ply and 5 lengths of timber and a few other things from the hardware store to extend the train layout so a full on day with the trains tomorrow, but with me lately plans seem to not workout the way I want it, happens to me all the time lol
On the way home this morning dropped the medical certificates over to the solicitor so now the compensation claim can go forward, so looking to early next year when we fight it out with the CTP insurer.

Just got back from a driving lesson but this time using my car, learning to drive my car with the left foot accelerator peddle after the mod done to our car has been easy for me to adapt, was easy for me riding my Norton and my modern bikes with different gear change sides, but the lesson are important to make sure I adapted as most amputees have troubles adjusting, my driving instructor is very happy with my driving using my left leg/foot I have one more lesson with her but she is putting in her report today and giving me 100% thumbs up, she going to get the insurer OT person to arrange my new medical certificate and the get my license changed so I be covered for insurance reasons just the thing amputees have to go through, they can't take my license off me but they can put the restrictions on it for left foot driving, just another hoops I got to jump through.

Well done more work on the train layout making extension tables for more track work, its great getting back into using power tools again cutting timber and using other tools, just getting on with my hobby, still haven't taken pics yet but will soon, might start a new thread just on hobbies we all like to do other than motorcycles and model railways is a big hobby, my shed is getting smaller but still have room for working on bikes.

Rehab are just about done just one more thing I got to adapt too with my walking and I be set free, I be glad when it's all done and dusted so I get back on with life and start on the Norton, have so much work to catch up on and getting out more as well, this last few months has felt like a prison sentence and only getting out for work release time lol, but I am lucky things have gone quicker for me than what most amputee go through waiting for a new limb as well if the accident would have been my fault.

My life has gone through a big change and will never be the same as before the accident, but I have adapted pretty quick to my situation and has blown out my mates who know me in how quickly I have progressed, also chatting with other amputees up at hospital and how far I am ahead of them who been through their lost limbs long before when I lost my leg, so in away I am doing real good and having the right attitude has helped with my recovery and having good friendships has also played a big part, keeping everyone with updates has also helped, I am not letting this beat me and I am good to go, but it hasn't been an easy road that's for sure, but I am getting there.

Last driving lesson today OT will be sending the paperwork to my doctor to fill out so I can get my license changed so next week I be all go for driving and be covered by insurance, what a lot of B S I got to go through, so now can only drive cars with the left foot accelerator peddle, going to hand in my truck license as I am retired and no longer need to drive large trucks no more, my truck driving days are over, but I am still driving while the paperwork is going through as far as I am concern I am still license to drive and no one is going to stop me, the car is all done for the left leg/foot driving, I am free again.

Finished off the train layout extension table today so just got to get a few things from my hobby shop and a few new points for the new section, once the new track is laid down before I take pics as I have so much crap laying on the layout it wouldn't be fair to take pics just yet and when I do I start a new hobby thread.

They gave me such a big workout up at rehab yesterday and the new hip workout is the final stage of walking right with a peg leg, its the hardest one and my trainer said every amputee says its the worst one but has to be done before they let me go, but all the work I been doing up in the shed it finally caught up with me and when I got home yesterday after lunch I was buggered, took my leg off for the afternoon and relaxed in my comfy recliner, just needed a good break, it's bloody hard work being legless all the time lol.

I have so much on at the moment but the start on the Norton is getting closer once rehab has finished, going to rehab takes up most of my day so once finish with them I have more time to catch up with 7+ months of doing nothing and now it's time I get back into the things I do best and the last 2 weeks getting back into the trains has got me motivated again and time to get back on with my life, but I just got to be more careful in how I deal with things and watch my step as still learning but am doing so good, nothing is going to stop me now, its full on to a normal life again, well near normal anyway.

Last driving lesson today OT will be sending the paperwork to my doctor to fill out so I can get my license changed so next week I be all go for driving and be covered by insurance,

Ashley
I notice you didn't say "...so I can go driving." The paperwork just means you are now legally/finacially covered. 🤣

As far as I am concerned I am still license to drive and the car has been modified have already got a medical certificate to say I am allowed to drive so I am not sure why they need another medical certificate from the same doctor who has already filled out the paperwork, this is from the insurer of the woman who hit us and caused the accident and the driving instructor has given me a 100% past with my driving skill using my left leg/foot, just more B S and more hoops for me to jump through for the insurer from the other party, so over it all, enough is enough as far as I am concern.

I don't class myself as disabled, yes I lost my lower right leg, just a flesh wound, but the hardest part is having to prove myself to others who don't know me and how determine I am to get on with my life, but the CTP insurer from the other party know they be paying out a big compensation payout for both Debra and myself, so maybe they are just trying to slow things down or what, I just don't understand the crap I have to deal with, no matter how much money is involved I just want to get on with my life and do what I have always done, yes it's a bit harder now for me but that's not going to stop me from going a head with my life.

Ashley

Been a bit of a break, but today I am now legal to drive on the road (although I been driving since the left leg/foot modification has been done to my car) but got the past from the driving instructor who gave the go ahead to the insure OT person who submitted the paper work to my doctor for the new medical certificate to be filled out to say I am fit to drive again using my left leg/foot, so this morning a drive to the transport dept to get my license upgraded.

A lovely young lady at the counter was so good doing the paperwork and we were chatting away as her dad has gone through the same all deal as myself losing a leg and told me what I have to do to retain my motorcycle license, I have to go through all the same B S with the OT person, prove I can ride again with the same driving instructor and getting another MC and get my license changed again but the good thing I have 5 years to do it by the law, so I have some time to go, but once all my rehab is done I will start on the bike modifications, but once I get my pay out next year I might even get myself a replacement modern bike to replace my Thruxton, can you imagine riding a old bike with a driving instructor and me using hand singles as my Norton don't have indicators, she probably wouldn't know what a hand single was lol.

I am so over having to prove myself to everyone, but that's the way thing go, more to do with CTP insurance more than the license, if I just rode without doing this and I did have an accident and others got hurt I wouldn't be covered CTP insurance is on top of registration and can't get anything registered without that cover, but I am now free again, back on the road and legal, watch out everyone he is back.

Ashley

Another big milestone Ash. Congratulations.
Yes a big step in the right direction (milestone) and the best part I now have my freedom back again, well a bit more freedom as I still got rehab to get through, till then the bike is still on hold till rehab is done and dusted, but won't be long as the urge to ride again is getting stronger but the B S I have to go through again to prove myself to others, but I will blitz through it like I did with the car driving, I like throwing my leg over things lol.

Been doing a lot on the train layout the last 2 weeks so that is keeping me busy, so life is starting to come back to normal for a retired man, keeping busy is the go, but I do miss my bikes so it won't be long before I start on the Norton, but I been thinking of a new replacement for the Thruxton as I think a left foot/leg gear change be a lot easier for my right peg leg, but will see how the Norton gear change will workout, but another new Triumph is looking good all depends on the payout, so much going through my head at the moment.

Debra is having troubles handling her recovery, she had a bit of a melt down last night while cooking tea, she said she is so over it all with her leg and knee pain and being hurt while the person that hit us is carrying on a normal life uninjured, sometimes I feel the same but as I say can't turn clocks back, it's happened and just got to get back up as soon as we can, our plans for this year has been turned upside down and planning for next year is still too far away to decide what we will do, but a trip up to Agnes Water/1770 is happening at the end of this year for her brother Tom's 60th birthday and hopefully gets some fishing out on the reef off shore from 1770, I might even get up to visit Rob ss while up that way, be good to have a beer with him, Rob's brother used to live at Tom's place.

Well not much has been happening with my recovery, in fact a bit over it all, last Wednesday up at rehab I had a bit of chat with Peter, I told him I need a break so he has given me 3 weeks off, he said I am doing so well with my walking that rehab now is all about building up my hip muscles, but also said because I am so advance with my training it is really up to me if I want too keep coming up to rehab, so I will wait and see how I feel after a break, the hip exercise is more for long term wear and tear on the hip and walking right, they are pretty happy in what I have done in the short time (well 6 months) with them and walking unaided.

So the next 3 weeks I have a lot to do but still got to be careful I don't over do things, but working on the train layout, getting the old Landy fixed so I can sell it, clean up the big mess in my shed and put the Norton on the lift table so I can get started on the ES install and other fabrication work needed, well at lease I won't be bored lol.

Debra is not doing real good at the moment, she is having a few bad days so I will also help her out while on my break, that is the worst part watching what she is going through with her right leg and pain she is getting, but she got to get more active in what she does and do more things as what I been doing, she got to get on top of things and I know it's hard for her, but it's something she has to do or the pain will win and get worst for her, old injuries and her new ones are starting the get to her with arthritis in a bad way, she broke her collar bones 8 times in her younger years, first time when she was a child falling down her back stairs over 18 stairs from top to bottom, she had bad eye sight when she was young and not very good balance and now 65 years old things catching up with her health wise and there is not much I can do about it, it's hard on both of us, but as I say she needs to get on top of it and not let her injuries win, but I can only support her and encourage her.

This is a VERY slippery slope that she MUST be assisted in, as much as possible, or her health (multiple aspects) will go on a steeper and steeper downhill slide until quality of life approaches zero.

It sounds like, with intervention and HARD/PAINFUL work, it can be AT LEAST slowed, maybe halted, and AT BEST, turned around to a BETTER quality of life. @ashman if it means you have to set aside some of your own time with things you enjoy, it's a sacrifice that needs to be weighed carefully.

I pray that you are able to "circle the wagons", everyone swallow their pride, and make the BEST of your remaining years!
