Ash is in hospital

Today was a great day, went for my first drive behind the wheel using my left leg/foot in a dual control car, I had no problems at all with using my left leg/foot, in fact did it with ease, smooth control for the hour lesson, because I am a amputee it's one of the things I have to go through to prove I can do it, the CPT insurer is paying for it all and the insurer OT person was with us, I had to do a few test before the lesson and road rule test but past with flying colours.

The road test did everything perfect even the emergency brake test, it seemed so natural for me driving with the left leg/foot, the driving instructor was pretty happy with the lesson but the OT person still insistent that more lessons were needed, think its more about money than my driving she asked the instructor how many more drives I need she said 3 but the OT person said 4, I have to do this for the insurer to pay for the dual foot control to be installed on our new car as they are paying for it, just got to play by their rules, also have to get a medical certificate from my doctor, so much B S and hoops to jump through and I have to do the same for my bike riding.

But it felt good driving again, I got to take my leg off when driving so it don't get in the way, having the dual control accelerator pedal when I am not driving it will fold up out of the way when Debra drives, got to go through all this B S just for insurance wise to cover me if ever I have an accident, the next driving lessons be a few weeks as it's all got to be approve by the CTP insurer who paying all the bills from our accident but there be no problems there, it just takes time.

I was driving very well today and can't workout why I need more lessons but I am being controlled by others who make the rules up as they go and they got to make sure/prove I can do it for their sake.

Imagine the shit storm if someone crashed, blamed it on their missing leg, and it came to light that they’d cut their lessons ‘short’.

They’ve gotta be on the cautious side.

I am in no hurries to get in full swing of things and driving again is part of recovery for this year and we both start fresh next year, but once the driving has been approved which it will it won't take long to do the 4 lessons and have the restriction put on my license, I no longer driving trucks so they can have my truck license as I am now retired, and once I put the ES kit on the Norton and I be riding again and go through the test everything will be done the right way by law and insurance wise, my days of being a bad boy doing things I am not suppose to do are long gone, well what they don't know won't hurt them.

Since my accident I have adapted to everything I do with a missing leg, driving and riding again will be the same as before the accident, just I remove my leg when driving a car, the bike I have 2 legs and no one will know when in my bike jeans and leather jacket riding gear except one lower leg be skinnier lol.

We have very good CTP insurance cover that is compulsory with registration to cover accident like what both Debra and myself have gone through, and everyone has to abide by the rules to be covered which I will do completely, it's the way it is, I do know some who haven't followed the rules and if anything happens they won't be covered and the cost to them could be out of their own pocket for damages to others and we all know insurance companies will do anything by law to get out of paying out money that will cost them.

Well not much been happening with me rehab last Wednesday, my backyard jungle finally got mowed Thursday, yard looking good now, been wearing the new leg a lot and so far no problems with rubbing or wear on the stump skin, been out a few times even some shopping, yesterday I dug up one of my garden beds the mower men didn't do, I just sat on my round stool with casters and used a few garden tools, have another garden bed to do but today I think I take it easy and muck around up in the shed with the trains, got a few new coaches the other day for the layout and more track to install.

Slowly getting back to a near normal life again, a few more weeks of rehab and should be done with them, things are coming along quite well at the moment, some more driving lessons before they do the mods to our car, but I will have a few restrictions put on my license when done, they take my truck licence off me but that's OK as I am now retired.

The leg makers no need to see me again till September for a check up on the fitting and tune up lol, I am getting a bit annoyed with the OT person who works for the CTP insurance company, with the things I need to do before they do the mods on our car, I'm having to jump through hoops to get things done, it's taken so far 8 weeks since my new wheelchair has been ordered and be August before I get it, how long to make a fu cking wheelchair, the hire one I am using is in such a bad state and that was before I got it.

Debra has a few visits back up to the hospital she wants me to go with her, pity I can't work her appointments with my rehab times as we both get up there in the free taxi so will have to go up on the bus, our local bus stop is just around the corner and up a bit from us and it goes right to the hospital bus station, at lease I be walking this time and not in the wheelchair, Debra is having a bit of pain in her right knee, mostly at night, been over 6 months now and she still has problems with her right leg, its healed up good but still pain in her knee.

The OT person has arranged for her to see a private specialist, but the cost to see him that we have to pay up front then wait for the insurance company to reimburse us, I told her to keep going up to the hospital as they have all her records from the accident/injuries and the doctors who did the repairs work, she gets a bit frustrated as every time she goes up for a follow up she has a different doctor, but they have all the reports/records there, I keep telling her she is not going up there 2/3 times a week like I am and sometimes more when I have follow up appointments, the good thing our public hospitals are free, the injuries she has suffered from the accident all takes time to heal and her right leg will never be the same, and now her old injuries from when she was young are starting to catch up with her as she gets older.

I got rid of my pain from the big chop and a few weeks healing from it, instead of years of skin and muscle grafts and many surgeries to save my right foot that might not save it in the long run, I think I made the right choice the way I went, I adapted pretty good and my mates can't believe how I am cooping from it, but it's been hard and having a few bad days, a few falls and all, it's not easy being legless everyday and even more so when I have a few beers in me lol.

I just want to jump in the car and go and the same, throw a leg over the old Norton and go for a run up into the ranges, so frustrating for me to be unable to ride my bike for so long, it's the longest ever for me without riding, it's not the same just looking at the bike in the shed and the B S I have to go through to be able to drive and ride again from no fault of our own, one woman mistake has changed Debra and my life forever, that's the worst part of this and our long recovery and the woman who hit us goes on with life, accidents happen, we were just unlucky that day.

Sorry for the ramblings on, not so much for me but watching Debra suffering with her pain is hard for me as nothing I can do about it, I try to encourage her but it's hard for both of us but harder for Debra too accept what has happen to her as well as myself, but I accepted my injuries from day one which has helped me to recover better, but having good friends around us has helped and now things are starting to slowly get back to a near normal life again, slowly but steady we go.

Had a bit of a set back yesterday up at rehab, Brittney who been training me came to the waiting area to get me and as I was walking with my 2 walking sticks she noticed I wasn't walking right, I had another younger train yesterday as Britt was busy with another amputee working beside us and even the younger one was picking up something wasn't right with how I am suppose to walk with my new leg, they tried a few little things and they not sure it's the leg or me, they ended up putting a sock over the insert but too me that made no difference, they are hesitant to adjust the leg with their leg tecs as my leg was made outside from a private company and they don't like other do adjustments on their legs.

My next rehab is on Friday with Peter he has over 20 years experience with amputees and she going to see what he thinks what is happening, could be my stump is shrinking more, who knows as I never lost a leg before lol.

My next driving lessons have been approved but I have to get a medical certificate from my doctor before I can do my next lesson, they seem to throw more walls in front of me to get on with my normal life again, from no fault of my own and it's me that has to jump through hoops to satisfied the other party CTP insurance, I didn't hit her she hit us and now we have to deal with all the B S, very frustrating for me having to deal with this sh it.

Been nearly a week since my last report, a bit of frustration has set in so been a bit quiet, my rehab is going well after Friday session with Peter, he put me through my hip works and next session on Wednesday he is taking me for a walk around the hospital grounds over a few hills and inclines instead of walking on flat ground, he is going to be surprised as I have already done hills as walking up to our local bakery up the road from me is a hill climb for me so I should be advance to what he expects lol.

Peter had a close look at the foot fitting to my peg leg and was amazed of it quality and said I have a top of the range foot and fitting, the hospital made leg wouldn't come close to the workmanship of my new leg.

My frustration has nothing to do with my rehab with walking but with the hoops I got to jump through to get back with driving and dealing with the OT person working for the CTP insurer and doing driving lessons to prove I can manage driving using my left foot and having to get a medical certificate to say I can drive with a left accelerator peddle fitted, I proved the first lesson I had no problems driving the modified dual control training car the instructor was very impressed with my first drive last week, she phoned me today and ask if I was ready for another session in the car next Monday, fu ck yeah, the CTP insurer is paying for 4 more lessons, before they will pay for our car modification with the accelerator peddle, it's just pissing me off having to go through all this B S from no fault of my own just from another person mistake.

Well my doctor had no problems filling out the medical certificate and she is so amazed in the quick progress I have made in the short time I had my new leg, in fact everyone I know can't believe how fast I have adapted to walking again as well from day one after our accident, but I am so wanting to get on with my life a soon as I can, I been wearing my new leg for most of the day now and rehab can't believe in how long I been wearing it without any problems with the stump and skin, they are a bit worried I might be pushing too fast, but as I told them, the new leg is comfortable and I would know if things weren't right, but so far all good, I only want to go forward and not backwards, I know my own body and so far so good.

Well before the weekend I am hopping to get the lift table set up in the workshop and get a mate over to help get the Norton up on it, the urge to start the ES install is getting stronger, nearly 7 months now and I got itchy fingers in getting on the bike, then there be more hoops to jump through, but fu ck them I need to get out on 2 wheels sooner than later, I need to get my freedom back again, at the moment I feel trapped in my own house/yard and I am taking it out on Debra when she is driving me around in our new car, she scares me being in the passenger seat and she is not used to driving a modern car with all the bells and whistles, she over corrects herself with the touchy electric power steering, I am trying to help her get used to it but she don't listen to me, so I stay scared when she is behind the wheel, she a good driver but think the accident has done something to her skill behind a wheel, something is not right and she struggling to get back on top, but then she has gone through a lot and still suffering from her injuries, she hasn't handle it as well as I have and I can see it in her.

I see it in her eyes the pain she has gone through and the tears she gets in her eyes, the anger she gets when she is in pain, it has affected both our lives from our accident but more so with Debra, my pain went away when they took my lower leg off, but Debra injuries/pain will be with her forever and there is nothing I can do to help her, but she will get on top of it, it just will take time, but I will always be there for her, it has pulled us together again and she a strong woman with help from me, but it's not been easy for both of us.

Our youngest daughter Rose had pulled away from both Debra and myself and her older sister over the years with a lot of problems she was going through, but our accident has brought her back to us and now she made it in the police force and she spending more time with us now compared to all those bad years from us, something she has woken up too and accepted she made a lot of mistakes and listening to people giving her bad advice and she now realized she made a lot of bad decisions in her younger life, but I always stuck with her, her and me are so alike its not funny, but I am so proud of her.

Just a thought from my own experience with the CNW starter on mine. On a couple of occasions I stalled it, easily done regardless of the starter, and in my haste to restart it I hadn’t pulled in the clutch and it didn’t like trying to move the whole bike - pop went the fuse like it ought to.
Then I had to remove the side panel, firstly the seat of course, then fish for the fuse holder, find a spare fuse, getting royally p’d off. I’m also holding up the traffic at the lights, and it’s ffff**** turning the air blue

Make sure your fuse holder is in plain sight, easily reached, and have some spare fuses with you. I keep one in a spare fuseholder looped over the offending culprit, ready for ‘next time’ which hopefully is never again n

How about a self resetting breaker like is very commonly used in automotive, for instance, Electric trailer brakes come to mind… Safe, effective, low cost… I don't see any downside

Once my Norton has fired up and running at normal temp I be able to with my peg leg should be able to give my Norton a kick, the Joe Hunt will fire up with a lazy kick and always 1/2 way through the kick when the motor is up to normal road temp, one of the reasons I love my JH magneto, no fuse at all to run, one thing I have never done in the 50 years of ownership is stall my Norton at lights or anywhere for that matter, unless I stall it on purpures, but then I never had a ES on my old Norton, my Norton is and has always been a well behaved bike in my hands, maybe patting it on the tank and thanking it after every ride has helped, or I just got lucky when I brought it new, or I just have a freak Norton, no matter what it has been very good for me, whether it's just been plain luck, I don't know, it also lets me know when something is not right.

Just had a call from our solicitor who is handling our compensation claim with the CTP insurer, 18 years of doing CTP claims and he is having so much trouble getting medical certificates from the hospital for our long term injuries, even from our local doctor, he can't progress with the claims till he has them and if he had them the long term compensation payout could be paid out early next year, so frustrating for him as well both me and Debra, its just 2 medical certificates we need, is that so hard.

Had rehab yesterday Peter gave me a good workout with my exercises then took me for a walk around the hospital using my walking sticks but only using one most of the time, walking up and down slopes, crossing gutters and uneven ground, he was so amazed in how I handled it all and I told him I been doing this for 2 weeks walking up to our local bakery as well the bus stop all on uneven ground and on a hill, then inside on the lower floor had to go up a flight of steps using one walking stick and one hand on the rails, wasn't a hard task for me at all.

When the first walk with him was down a few corridors and ended up outside the Morge, I said to Peter "I am not ready to go there just yet and I had a shower this morning lol" but the workout with the walking was great although I been doing it for sometime now and he knows that, he is so pleased in my progress but he wants to build up my hip muscle to make it easier in the long run for my walking so a few more weeks and I be set free from rehab.

There was another lady amputee with me in rehab and when waiting to come home in the transit area we were talking, she lost her leg January last year but has a hospital made leg, when I told her its only been coming up to 7 months since my accident she was so amazed in how far advance I was to her rehab, we also talked about how things have changed from our situation and because insurance is covering my cost my leg is so much better than the hospital made leg, the foot on my leg has more movement in the heel as well the foot itself, was good talking with another amputee, things will never be the same for both of us, would have liked to chat with her longer but her taxi was ready, as well she only getting rehab once a fortnight through the public system where mine is paid for from the CTP insurance provider and getting 2 and sometime 3 days a week, make a big difference to learning to walk again quicker, I just want to get back on with life and getting a compensation payout is not right on top of my head at the moment, recovering for both Debra and myself is more important at the moment.

I am having a day of rest today after the big workout yesterday but my stump is doing pretty good, the leg is fitting nicely and feels comfortable wearing it for 7 hrs at a time, rehab trainers just shake their heads and know I been doing more than what they want me to be doing, I know my limits and how far I can push myself, without hurting or wearing any skin off my stump, I want to go forward and don't want to go backwards with injury or open sores from rubbing, so far haven't had any problem with the new leg, my leg maker has done a great job with the fitting.

Going to put the Norton up on the lift table in the next day or so just need a mate to come up and give me a hand to push it up, I have the urge to fit the ES kits as well a few other mods and a complete rewiring of the Norton for the ES kit to work its best, it will still be a simple wiring harness, with the Joe Hunt things are so much easier, no coils etc to be wired up, keep it simple, keep it sweet and having the right tools to do the job helps, not going to rush it as I still have a few months before I even think about riding again, might even see if I can kick it over using my peg leg before I put it on the lift table and see if I can use the foot and leg to change gears, you never know.

I can't believe we made it over 700 threads, but to all my friends here it has helped me to get on with life and everyone have been so good for me as well Debra and the support we both have gotten, so many people to be thankful too and a big thank you to Jerry and his wife, Paul (GP) for what he has done and to everyone who has help us get through all this, outstanding is all I can say, by the way did I mention the Joe Hunt magneto, sorry couldn't help myself lol.

I am having a day of rest today after the big workout yesterday but my stump is doing pretty good, the leg is fitting nicely and feels comfortable wearing it for 7 hrs at a time, rehab trainers just shake their heads and know I been doing more than what they want me to be doing, I know my limits and how far I can push myself, without hurting or wearing any skin off my stump, I want to go forward and don't want to go backwards with injury or open sores from rubbing, so far haven't had any problem with the new leg, my leg maker has done a great job with the fitting.

Going to put the Norton up on the lift table in the next day or so just need a mate to come up and give me a hand to push it up, I have the urge to fit the ES kits as well a few other mods and a complete rewiring of the Norton for the ES kit to work its best, it will still be a simple wiring harness, with the Joe Hunt things are so much easier, no coils etc to be wired up, keep it simple, keep it sweet and having the right tools to do the job helps, not going to rush it as I still have a few months before I even think about riding again, might even see if I can kick it over using my peg leg before I put it on the lift table and see if I can use the foot and leg to change gears, you never know.

I can't believe we made it over 700 threads, but to all my friends here it has helped me to get on with life and everyone have been so good for me as well Debra and the support we both have gotten, so many people to be thankful too and a big thank you to Jerry and his wife, Paul (GP) for what he has done and to everyone who has help us get through all this, outstanding is all I can say, by the way did I mention the Joe Hunt magneto, sorry couldn't help myself lol.

Monday busy day had amputee rehab this morning and a second driving lesson using my left leg/foot this afternoon at 4:30 which I just got back from, the driving instructor is very happy, she didn't leave fingernail impressions in the dash from my driving lol, no she is very pleased in how I am driving, she also told me the driving lessons have been approve as well the modification to our car so things are moving on, just got to wait for the insurer OT person to make contact when things will be done to the car.

Had a big workout at rehab this morning 40 minute hip exercise and 20 minutes walking around the hospital on different levels of ground and steps, this time was going down the step so the reverse of our last session walk about, was a good workout as I had a sweat up after and when I finally got home at 1:30 I was glad to take my leg off for a break, but had to put it back on to get to the driving lesson car out front, but as soon as I got in the car I had to take the leg off to drive and also put it in the back of the car by myself to show I can do it as well reach it to put back on after the lesson.

Friday next rehab and next Monday at 2pm for next driving lesson, 3 more lessons to go, fu cking things I have to go through to prove myself, but has to be done, I just got to play by the rules.

I think you are right there Paul, jumping through hoops is just part of losing a leg and proving too everyone I can do it, ever since the accident I have proved to everyone involved in my recovery that I am an independent person from day one, I was out of bed the first morning after the big chop, going too the bathroom myself, I adapted real quick in doing everything without help, I had my mishaps but I got straight up and back into it as I had no choice but to do so and it got me home a lot quicker a few weeks before Debra was allowed to come home, so getting on with my life is my number one thing to do now and to push Debra along the way as well for her recovery.

Getting mobile again is the next stage of my recovery, getting my freedom back is very important to me and getting out and about visiting my mates, the car is the first step and that won't be long now as am doing so well driving using my left leg/foot, once that is done the bike will be next, first installing the ES kit and other work that is needed on the Norton, then I have to go through the same process with jumping on the bike again, another hoop of proving to others I can do it, other have done it and I will blitz through it, no one is going to throw no more brick walls in front of me, I am going for it no matter what, its just the way I am, even the amputee rehab trainers know I am doing more than what they want me at this stage of my rehab, but I am honest with them and tell them what I been doing and they know I will be doing it so I can get back on my feet, well one foot anyway lol no matter what, but I am taking in what they have been teaching me, but I am doing it for me to get back on with my life and they know it.

All these people who are in control of my recovery just don't understand I need to take control of my life again with some help on the way but I got to do it on my terms, just sick of other hiding behind computers deciding what is best for me, but they just don't know me and how determined I am to recover from this as soon as I can, Peter at rehab knows as we talk about things while he is training me to walk the right way, he understands my needs to get up from this as quickly as possible, my mates can't believe how I have progressed so quickly, one day I in a wheelchair, next on crutches and the next time they see me I am walking and is such a short time.

@ashman this is "One Arm Bob" putting his triathlon bicycle back on his bike. He has throttle, front brake, and clutch all on the left handlebar, and can keep up with ANYONE on a similar "normal" bike. Bob is one of my son's PT therapists, and competes with my brother-in-law (right side stroke survivor - no use of right side) in triathlons (running, bicycle and kayak)

...and this is my youngest son, Alex, who learned to ride a mini-bike at age 4, and now can ride any bike quite well (at age 15, almost 16). He really likes my ZRX 1200Rs, but not legal till he's 16. Since he's never known anything but one limited-range finger on his left hand, he just learns EVERYTHING as if it's normal. He REALLY wanted to have a go with Bob's bike, but maybe after he gets his full license in October.

You may need to change the Hunt mag.

A friend who should know what he is talking about said Hunt magneto is now owned by a New Zealander.

Don't know if that's true but always good to wind up an Ozzie.

By the way I spent last week touristing about the NZ North Island with my Darwin Northern Territory born granddaughter. Plus I have a Queenslander daughter in law and a son in the Australian infantry. So I have to be careful with the Ozzie jokes these days.

Not at all Johnm, us Aussies and Kiwi's are great mates, yes we put sh it on each other and joke around but we wouldn't have it any other way, I worked with Kiwis all my life and have a few very close Kiwi mates, fu ck we have so much fun putting sh it on each other, the rest of the world just don't understand our ways down under, I haven't met a bad Kiwi yet.
As for the Joe Hunt, I never change that, it works so well on my Norton and been running JH magnetos for over 24 years without any problems on 2 British bikes, if they are set up right you won't have any problems with them.

the reason why I made a one piece axle for an mk3 rear wheel is because the mk3 rear is in a 1983 kawasaki gpz 1100 swingarm.
