Anyone had experience with horn repair?

I'm curious if any forum users have had success with repairing the original horn. The horn doesn't sound when the blade connector is hooked up to the positive output of a 12 volt power source and the negative power source cable is placed against the horn housing. I removed the big screw and replaced after cleaning the small bit of corrosion I found there. The surface of whatever lies at the bottom of the hole was bright and shiney and round.

What does the big screw do and what does the little bolt do? Pretty basic stuff but I've never seen any instruction on it. Think I'll try a google search. I didn't come up with anything when using the forum search engine except that the horn gets installed pretty early on in the rebuild sequence.

Agreed, replace it, if there is any corrosion, then the contacts inside may be shot. Since it is so well hidden, get a better sounding one.

As I can't see the horn it's a guess, but the big screw alters the tone of the horn, you can screw it in and out, (obviously!!!!!!), it will go the ful range from no sound through the range back to no sound, if that makes any sense. Only reason I know is I messed about with a couple of horns that I had that didn't work. For a quick fix I agree with the rest and would buy a smaller horn and fit it somewhere easily accessable , mine is between the coils at the front.

I got a generic horn from my local NAPA store that's (a bit) louder and fit righ in the same spot.

The Commando seems to have been built around the horn...

In the UK we have Taff the horn! Yes he is Welsh. A true blue biker. He can restore anything & often has exchanges & parts on the shelf. Fair prices as well.
I will look in Old Bike Mart for his details.

Brilliant guy , got me a proper horn for my A65, and took parts of a couple of old horns in part payment, the type of guy that helps keep the classic scene going.
Thouroughly recommended!

If you really want to, you can drill the rivets out of the Lucas 9H and clean and lube the bits inside, then seal it back together with RTV silicone and pop rivets. You can adjust the tone of the horn with the large center screw. I've done a couple that way, but Fiamms are usually relatively cheap and much louder.
