Re: Any stories successful or otherwise on the CNW elec star

well, that air filter is sure gonna make the CNW starter more entertaining to buy.

Hello, I'm new to this forum and just received a CNW electric start kit for my 74 Commando Roadster, that I've owned since 1979. I have a bad right foot so I kick start bikes with my left foot. Unfortunately my left knee is not what it used to be. The electric starter will allow me to continue enjoying my Commando.

I am a retired engineer with a lot of experience in aerospace fabrication. My impression of the kit is excellent: the design and fabrication are top notch. I'll try to install the kit in the next few days and will post my impressions.

Quiet Power Drive is currently there and sells an elec start, a belt primary, and a belt final drive. I just got off the phone with the owner. He hand fits the elec start and I believe it is about the same price as the CNW conversion. Just setting the record straight on this.
Did you ask him how long it takes? Also, I believe Bob requires that the entire engine be sent to him (or at least the entire bottom end with cradle)...

Re: Any stories successful or otherwise on the CNW elec starter?
It has to be said that even with a new seal, there will most likely be some blow by. We never knew how how much when running wet primaries but with a dry one, you will see some oil below the alternator with miles. Easy to remove the outer cover when you are running dry though, so its just a matter of wiping it out every now and then
A one-way reed valve should cure this. Especially a CNW one!

Update on the starters - I have about 5k miles on both the CNW starter and the Alton on 2 different bikes. Today the Alton Sprague failed. The CNW is still going strong.

Hi allver67, I don’t want to derail this thread to Alton, but are you referring to the sprag or the backfire protection ( the plastic pins)?

I’ve just fitted an Alton so it’s of interest to me.

Cheers,

Just curious- will the hump on the inner primary clear an "S" type exhaust system?

The 'hump' should clear your header pipes. It is set back 5/8" back from the split line between the inner and outer primary. So if you look at your bike, you should find that your pipes would clear this no problem. This was confirmed on an "S" that was in the shop so double check on yours to make sure.

Matt / Colorado Norton Works

I will give my update on the Colorado Norton works starter kit on our 73 850. Ours was one of the first ones out that was installed by STS in Florida over 2 years ago. It has been flawless in starting our Norton with just a touch of the button every time! The kit now comes with a new crank seal as ours was leaking as was not discovered till after a few miles. The primary runs dry now ! The mini ham can filter kit I saw in a recent post was shown by Cyclecraft in Australia as a possible solution to replacing the bare K&N filter. I emailed them twice but they didn't respond about availability or cost. Matt at CNW said this week that he will have a similar kit available later this year.
