If anyone has any questions on the Alton starter kit for the Norton Commando, just post them as a reply, Hervé Hamon is visiting and I can pick his brain for a proper answer (he is very talkative)

I have a question for Herve',but not about the Alton starter. I'm interested in the starter he is developing for oversized /high comp. Vincents. I think I already know the answer, since he is visiting you Jean, he is on holidays and the starter can wait!

Say hello for me. :D

My long standing question....

I have an RGM Belt drive, is there a version of the kit for this application? but more importantly I have converted my Commando to Negative Ground.
The kit I purchace must satisfy both these criterea RGM Belt Drive AND Negative Ground

Can Alton supply ?

Thanks

Alton is coming out with a new starter motor which is more powerful, it can spin in the correct direction with either a negative or a positive ground. I will ask about the RGM belt and reply.

Has the existing starter motor proved to be inadequate? Would this stronger motor add to the cost of the kit? How long before the stronger starter would be available?

Thanks,

No, the current motor is strong enough, they are looking for a motor shorter in lenght to be able to fit the kit on the early Commandos with the points in the back of the timing chest (first Fastbacks), they could at the same time offer an option of longer in lenght starter motors with more power for those with hopped up engines with high compression.

From what I was told, the parts are made, but Paul is too busy with the production of the starter kits, it's coming...

It's coming, one day soon you will only have to push a button to light it up, Hervé will have a model to show at the Stafford show this coming autumn :D

If this is the French starter ask him if the chains I gave him at Stafford work.

I have already supplied replacements to folks in UK and some feedback would be good.

Andy

Perhaps a bit late - would a kit be adaptable or foreseen for a Maney (street!) belt drive with cutaway inner primary for a gearbox outrigger?
Suspect the answer is not too hard to guess - but might be good to have in the searchable archives . . .
Thanks,
GL

My 1 year old Alton starter is still working fine although the starter chain has a lot of slack. Andy is that the reason you supplied Alton with other starter chain?
If so is it recommended to replace my chain for the new type chain?

Yep.

I have just supplied a Mr Mills with a big pinned iwis bush chain
for this use.

Andy

PS It was 52 links long

Hello Andy,
Have recently registered on this forum and will attempt a first posting!
Just received the chain for the Alton in the post today. Original chain slack to start with (mentioned in the fitting instructions that this is intentional), but got even slacker in no time at all.
One that you supplied looks much more substantial, will report on 'slackness' when I fit it in the very near future. However may not start engine for a week or so as am doing other work on the bike.
