Another xs breather question

I have my engine in bits on the bench and was thinking the same thing only yesterday  , at the moment I have the xs breather mounted on the rear of the air filter back plate. There is plenty of room just in front of the exhisting breather, drill two mounting holes , drill and file out a slot , make up a gasket , split the xs breather you don't need the mounting bracket or the inlet half of the casting.
should all go together quite neatly, I then also considered using a differnt read block, I have a friend who flys model air craft and many of these have small read blocks , I may try and find one that I can mount inside the timing case,
ps. any one know is the breather pipe at the rear of the timing case a press fit or is it screwed in ?

Screwed in

Is the XS breather available from any of the regular Norton parts suppliers here in the UK? It gets a lot of good reports & even though my engine does'nt leak much, there is always a bit of oil here & there after a good run.

Hi Bob i don't think they are available in the Uk ,either Germany or the Netherlands.Go to" Mikes xs parts" and the links are there(i got mine from Germany 20/4/09 28 euro's).............Cheers Andy

I just installed my xs650 breather yesterday, upgraded from the 80190 motormite, which worked but what a difference when I installed the yamaha one my roll on power is way better espspecially 2nd gear roll on.
I to was thinking of running it very close to the timing chest by cutting hose with only a inch of hose showing and attaching it right there. But someone on this forum mentioned it should be solidly mounted. I would think between the two hoses it might move around a bit but still work.

Has anybody tried this

cheers

Yes, it works fine.
There's no reason as far as I can see to solidly mount it and there were no instructions with mine to say it should.

Like Rich, I mounted mine just off the timing case. My Mk3 was a frame-off rebuild, so the oil lines were new and quite stiff, and support the valve (which is quite light) well without any rigid mounting. I have no knowledge of the bike's oil leakage prior to my rebuild, but I can say that 200 miles into the break-in, my garage floor is pristine. The valve as mounted works great.

I was thinking of actually hard mounting it to the case. Modifying the case, or welding the stock tube to the breather

Perhaps in theory the pcv should be as close to the crankcase as possible. I mounted mine behind the air cleaner, secured with a cable tie. All I can say is that there is no oil mist on the front cylinder head fins or around the rocker covers like there used to be. It works in that position and it isn't solidly mounted. I don't understand why the valve should be solidly mounted but maybe someone will explain. All I am saying is that modifying the back of the timing case may not be necessary. Why don't you try mounting it behind the air cleaner and see if it works? If it does, job done.

I suppose the elasticity of the air in the hose between the valve and the case would subdue the performance of the reed valve somewhat. Having it right on the case would achieve top efficiency although it may function adequately when mounted on a length hose anyway.

We all do mods that take far more time and effort than may be necessary but that's the fun and enjoyment of it all and why we have pride in our bikes. If you have the engine on the bench for the winter why not go for it! The CNW valves are a sweet/neat package.

Yes, a fair point! I've lost count of the amount of time spent on modifications and upgrades.

Mine is mounted under the seat right where the hose kinda needs a right angle anyway. I'm having a hard time believing that 21 inches of 1/2" herringbone hose is gonna reduce its effectiveness. I removed the mounting bracket from the XS breather to make it a bit smaller and tie wrapped the hose to the frame. It ain't going anywhere.

These are reed valves from a Honda Camino 50cc moped .
I bought several of those for next to nothing .
I never did anything with them , but I suppose that with a little imagination they could be used on a Norton .

What's the dimensions on those?
