To all Norton owners in New Zealand, just had my 1973 Commando(Silver) stolen in broad daylight middle of the day from the Greerton shopping centre in Tauranga during the cherry blossom festival, midday today.
Went there to look at a friends bike who made it all himself, concept bike.
Luckily a young lad doing pony rides for the festival thought it looked a bit out of place and also the mum of the kid who was on the pony took some pics so we have an ID on the van and a vague description of the thieves.

All sorts of info coming including first names and associated addresses (Tauranga is a small place really).
Feels like the loss of a family member.
Look out it Trade Me and Ebay for bits !!!!
Hoping we get it back in one piece, the tom toms of social media thanks to my young daughters are in full song
Regards Mike

Damn. Do you have a pic of it you can post here and a list of the more telling bits? Hope you have it well insured...

Sorry to hear this man. I been bitten before also. Never let them out of my sight anymore, if I cant see it I don't leave it.
Sorry for you, hope you get her back. Some low life's stole a buddy's kids bike, I paid them a visit with a pick handle, Got the bike back.

Hi Mike
very sorry to read this, even insurance wouldn't cover the sweat and tears we put into our toys.
Hopefully it isn't back to the bad old days for Brit bikes.
Lets hope the photos help catch the pricks and that they get more than a wet bus ticket.
Iain.

That's just totally crap isn't it, are the police even interested even if you can identify the scum the police wont be allowed to violate their special privacy, I hope you get it all back

UK police won't give chase to motorcycle thieves if they remove their crash helmets because they might crash and hurt themselves.

When the human rights of criminals are placed above those of law abiding citizens, the balance of social order is tipped, boundaries are lost, etc...

Not good.

Thanks guys, FB has the owners of the van plus pics and boasts over other matters so we are closing in
Regards Mike

On a positive note - a friend had her car stolen. A couple months later she discovered it parked a few blocks away from her house. It had new tires and other repairs. She used her key and drove it away.

I used to own a 1200cc 1947 Indian Bonneville chief. If I went into a store -after 15min I would start freaking out and would go out to check to see if it was still there.

Hope you get yours recovered.

damn I hate to hear about a Commando being stolen! hope you get it right back and they are prosecuted

insurance, is covering a motorcycle in New Zealand too prohibitively expensive because of the laws or something?

Thanks Guys, just been told the green van is on its way to AKL to be sold, cops alerted at points along the way.
Be good if they still have the bike inside, although due to the public coverage, I doubt it
Regards mike

That sort of shit used to go down in the early 70"s, when you could not get parts for your Norton or any British bike for that matter, , the bikies used to steal them to rob them of the parts required. I still keep mine loced up and when i go out for lunch say, I always park it so i can see it. When I visit friends overnight, it stays in their garage. Some guys chain there bike up as well. Looks like we are headed for the good old days again eh.

Good luck Mike. Hope all goes well.
Dereck

Thanks Dereck.
Seems the power of the inet and social media prevailed and the van hadnt got out of town, another Commando owner who was aware of the inet coverage, spotted the van very close to the scene of the crime followed it while ringing the cops and waited at a distance until cops pulled the vehicle over.
Driver/one of thieves is in custody , he maintains he doesnt have the bike but MAY know its where abouts, heres hoping he coughs up.
If they release him, there will not doubt be interested parties that will help jog his memory as to the address!!!
NZ and Tauranga is a small place in the real world !!!

Thanks for all the comments.
Regards Mike

Hallelujah, I hope it all works out and you get the bike back. Bike thieves should be hung just like they used to do the horse thieves.
