Not sure but My Roy Bacon Norton twin Restoration says combats started in june of 1970
my Combats are built in 72 with serial numbers in the +200000
the Combats head has a C stamped on the top under the head steady and would have used 932 Amals. these heads were skimmed 0.040" to raise compression and used a 2 S cam.
The bike is probably a 71 with the breather hole on the left side at the end of the cam bearing (which is blocked off with a bolt) should have a hose attached to an elbow in this location, which is a crank case vent. In 72 and combats they moved this to the rear of the engine near the bottom.
Nice project non the less. Cheers

Although this bike seems to have been modified, (timed breather capped of to start with) I doubt very strongly that this bike ever was or is now a Combat. Unless this motor was dismantled, and rebuilt with the proper cam and the addition of a Combat shaved head, this appears to be a stock 71 with the addition of the front disk hub and an after market mikuni carb.

Early non reinforced case bitsa , unless cases modded . to early external appearance . Rear breather location needs ascertaining .
2A frame has angled gusset on inner rear shock mount plate ( stops the sub frame falling of if the pillion overeats or the top box is used for gold smuggling .

If the milage is genuine I wouldnt let the year put you off .

Apparently the "Combat" tuned engine was available by special order (for racing etc.) before the factory management decided to fit them to the majority of 1972 production machines.

From the pictures it looks like the breather is taken off the cover plate in the timing chest and goes out to the tail light. The frame doesnt appear to have the gussets on the shock mount, that is the breather hose

Thanks for the clarification LAB. The book made an indirect reference to the engines being available. I raised my eyebrow on that cause I have two. Both are 72’s with the introduction of the front disk.
except one has 32 mm bores on the intake and one has the 30 mm inlets. Go figure :?:
