Late last summer Trixie's KS made a grinding/rubbing sound w/o transmitting torque to start the engine but not like prior worn out ratchet clinking stripping sounds. Worked fine with easy step on once past TDC, [not kick down] to start just prior to failure w/o a hint of lurking trouble. Found slightly 'normal' rounded ratchet edge but not enough not to ratchet, then I saw how ratchet was hung up-fouling against one of the steel stop plates so it would not release to engage inside 1st's inner teeth. Ugh, top one show below is both bent down below plane of its mate and has a chewed up engagement face. Those plates are robustly steel riveted on so don't know the fix but to replace at this point. What would the Gods of Nortondoom do?

"What would the Gods of Nortondoom do?" I'm no gawd, but I would suggest you go back to using a gasket on your transmission covers.

Alrighty thanks LAB that reveals new repair parts I never knew even had a market for until now. I dislike the grinding and bashing repair work tasks but its been a theme song on my C'do saga's, ugh. Also need to figure out what caused this type failure. Concour's snide remark is miss directed at me as I was advised to do it by ancient or now dead UK based builders when I ran out of gaskets on Peel's past drive train destructions that didn't bother KS stops but will check to see if that could give KS stops a fouling issue. Trixie's tranny has over 8000 miles on it so curious to see how bushes survived after avoiding much lower gear use, though I only ran normal gear lube in her not ATF like Peel. Rather pleased that the old spines of KS shaft and lever with gap opened and 3 splines removed plus grade 8 clamp bolt allows hand only fitting and removing, whew.

Wes and I been chewing on what could of allowed the kick shaft/ratchet to move out of its inner case bore enough side of ratchet could foul on top of the steel plate. I ain't pulled the main guts out yet but did find the clutch nut had backed off some which would allow shifting shaft to DS out of the bore. Do note lack of gaskets would tend to prevent space to shift otherwise.

Got the primary off and going into the gearbox tonight. I guess there is no limit to how much time spent admiring the whole bike and examining each individual part looking for the little things that please the beast. Its like highschool dating all over again!

Has the bush in the kickstart shaft moved in further? any wear marks on recessed face of first gear? First gear bush ok?

Yes not many machines as cute inside and out as Brit cycles and I waste a lot of time handling and enjoying scrapping and cleaning each item on the way in. I'm trying the mature older man act this year using mild temperature intervals to dig into mower engine before resuming life style of ongoing motorcycles recovery, so have not looked close or even past Trixie's inner cover yet [extending my hopeful state] but made note to double check the kick shaft bush. I've tried to stay out of lower gears use on Trixie to extend sleeve bush life. Will report back if anything other than the clutch nut back off guess allowed the ratchet fouling or other things disappointing. About 8K miles so far on this gear box. Just went out to see the big 1st gear thin bush is still a tight fit, then my ears got cold.
