Hi,

Due to Brexit purchasing from the UK for me is not an option, I'm based in Ireland. Anything coming from the UK gets hit with higher shipping cost, import duty and vat + it adds about two weeks to the delivery time due to Irish customs, they are VERY slow. I could swim the Irish sea quicker than the delivery times!!

I can't purchase off the German Andover Norton Site as they only ship to Germany, Switzerland & Austria only!!

Any good suppliers of Andover Norton parts in Europe anybody can recommend?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Click, in his latest news AN said that he will not supply anymore his parts " to little Charly when you could have them from Charles ", that plus the fact as you said the german andover only ship to germany /swittzerland/austria (??) and that there are no european dealer, last time (one month ago) I had ordered frim then and their recommended DPD shiping ( delivery duty paid) I had paid twice the VAT ,and no one could help........................

I buy parts from the EU for a couple of Italian bikes that clutter my shed.
They always charge VAT. And I get charged it again by U.K. customs.
It’s not customs that’s wrong. If selling parts outside of your VAT area you should not charge VAT.
No one is supposed to pay it twice.
But like you said marinatlas, no one seems able to help. So I just have to factor it in to the cost of the parts, and the decisions as to whether or not I really want them.
Hopefully it’ll get sorted eventually. But I do fear it won’t be soon…

Wow!!! not good news!! can't understand the business model when they have a German based business but don't sell into most European countries? and you use your UK based business to do this, not EU customer friendly!!

I've reached out to a few suppliers to see if they can still supply or might have old stock from AN?

I might have to bite the bullet & purchase from the UK which as you already know is a right pain in the wallet!!

Might be cheaper to get a flight over, with a large suitcase!?

Sounds strange. I don't pay UK vat on parts sent to NZ. But will pay our version GST when it enters NZ. (If over $50)

Sounds like the UK hasn't got its Bretix act together. No surprises there.

Could you ask Andover why they are charging UK VAT on parts that are being exported to another country? Surely that's against the law. Who is getting the money?

Please read the article in the source again, the comment above is amalgamating two different situations.

Though the originating post mentions Brexit it is small part in the problem, don't let the Eurocrat dictators fool you. This is due to the system they have have in place which says VAT is payable to the country in which the goods are delivered to. If you live in Ireland and order parts from France, then either the vendor in France collects the Irish VAT at point of sale and then pays it quarterly to the Irish revenue collector, or its shipped VAT free and the Irish post collect the VAT and most probably a handling fee for doing so.

The Italians do their own thing and it varies daily it seems.

Do not confuse Brexit with a crap IOSS / EOSS system that the EU introduced. AN ship daily to many countries worldwide, many parcels arrive within 7 days customs cleared to the customers address. There was no Brexit act for AN to get together, it became just like shipping items to the rest of the world, it was the EU that could not handle the changes they required with 27 countries each interpreting them differently, and the EOSS / IOSS system that they introduced shortly after. The country or origin and commodity code on the apaerwork is not just applicable to the UK but the rest of the world when it sends items into the EU, again this was introduced by EU and not as part of Brexit.

Some customers ask for items to be added to the order, but once we have packed it and attached the shipping docs this is not possible so shipping has to be repaid and another box packed. The reason being is that many shippers now 'pre-clear' customs prior to the parcel arriving at the border. What is in the package must be reflected on the attached paperwork, if it is different then that could lead to whole lot of trouble.

Paying VAT twice or VAT & Customs makes me wonder if it would be cost effective to buy from the US even with the high shipping cost. In the UK and/or EU do you pay customs or VAT when buying from the US? We don't pay customs or sales tax when buying vintage motorcycle parts from the UK or EU.

Do you have any friends or relatives in Northern Ireland that these could be shipped too.... then travel up to collect them??

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the suggestions, I was talking to Joe from AN and he explained some of the reasons why the German part of his business can't supply to other EU countries, boring German government 'stuff'.

Just to clear something up, AN do not charge VAT if the parts are being exported outside the UK if you choose the courier option for shipping, in my instance the difference between 'normal' post & courier was 1 euro!
The Courier company process the package when it arrives in Ireland and charges you import duty & Irish VAT on behalf of the Irish government + I'm sure a handling charge (which I've no problem with), this will be much quicker than Irish customs and our own postal service who are very slow, in my experience, processing items which come from the UK.

Overall the ideal solution would be the German AN side of the business would supply all of Europe but unfortunately it does not look like this is possible.

I had thought about the sending of items to a NI address but I have an event I want to go to on the Norton in about a week so had to find the quickest way of getting the items to me without being charged silly amounts of money :)

Order processed today with AN UK, so all good on my end, apart from my wallet being a bit lighter:rolleyes:

Once again thanks for all the help & advice

If they don’t charge vat, and you only pay vat in Ireland, I’ve miss understood and don’t understand your problem? If you could buy from Germany, they would charge you vat anyway, so apart from a handling charge at the Irish end, what is causing extra cost ?

Two things:

1. cost of shipping, getting something from the UK can cost 25-30 euro since its international shipping. Most European suppliers charge around 10euro for shipping within Europe, this depends on what deals they have with their shipper.
You also have to factor in the change from Euro to sterling which adds more cost.
Also at the time of my original post I thought, incorrectly, that AN UK charged VAT on all items shipped to Ireland.

2. Time was my main factor, everything which is regarded as 'international' i.e. coming from the UK must go through Irish customs, this can take 3-5 days on top of the shipping time. The last package I got from the UK was sent by normal post, it took 3 days to get to Ireland, then 4 days for customs to make up their mind how much they were going to charge me, once I paid the charges it then took 10 days to get the package to my address!!!

At the time of my original post I thought it would be a simple answer of just go to such & such in Europe & they can supply, simple, I save 30-40euro but the main thing is I get it in a few days without having to pay a big premium for a couriered service.

Once I clarified that I was not going to get AN items somewhere in Europe in a timely fashion I just got on with it & purchased off AN UK and just excepted that things have changed and the cost base for AN parts for me has risen.

I don't regard myself as 'tight' with money but I also want to make sure I'm not waisting money unnecessarily, hope this make sense!!

As always this has been an education.

Of course not. They would shoot themselves in the foot if they did.

Wrong. The VAT tariff NIL covers all forms of export by a third party shipping company.

Right. So there you have it. Need parts quickly? Pay the price of fast track shipping.

Overall the ideal solution would be the German AN side of the business would supply all of Europe but unfortunately it does not look like this is possible.
No, it wouldn't, and the reason is, AN is the spares hub, not the german operation. So any parts sold via the german operation would have a profit margin added.

I am not sure what this wining is about. Live with it, as most of us have to, or pay for the faster lane shipping.

They always charge VAT. And I get charged it again by U.K. customs.
And why do you accept that? I always make up a deal before ordering. No local VAT permitted!
What happens is, the seller puts this money into his pocket. Double book keeping etc. It happens a lot on eBay. I've had my fights with these scammers.

Right. You are in the driver's seat. Don't allow them to do so!

You are your own master. The responsibility for correct VAT handling lies with the seller. You make sure he does.

Hi knut,

Appreciate your replies, as I said I'm all sorted now & have a better understanding of getting AN parts to Ireland.

You are quite right, my learning was already to agree the vat free price up front in future for any expensive orders.

Or, and this is what I basically tend to do instead, find a U.K. supplier. I basically concluded that if they can’t be bothered to serve me properly, I’ll give my money to someone who does.

Vote with my wallet !
