I am not real impressed with the durability of these units. Tiny screws and flimsy stator mounting . Bought a used unit and got screwed, but the question is what happened? Yea and the relay was fried too.

Unfortunately you buy a used unit and you never know how it’s been treated.
Looks like the staters not been fitted using the supplied tabs to set the clearance.
If that’s the case it’s not really the Alton’s fault.

the wear on the coil wires are on the outside/bottom and the rotor to stator clearance would not effect that area, the rotor itself shows wear and tear on its aluminum skin which appaers to be crimped on somehow. The skin is very thin and the tiny magnets inside are epoxied into place underneath it. Got no response from alton on any questions, but replaced all the damaged parts (Ed from Morries helped alot 👍 ) with new and it seems to be working good.

I have a new-in-the-box CNW unit, For Sale at a decent discount (CNW doesn't have any on the shelf at the moment) - Make a reasonable offer and it will be on it's way today.

I thought if i did it for him, he would have more time to repair the commutator. :)

Get in touch with Alton (phone call seems to work best) even though your starter is old they may still be able to help.
I had a similar problem a few years ago and they sent me replacement parts for free even though my starter kit was bought in 2013.

it looks like you have an early rotor I had mine fail { came all apart ) many years ago got a free updated one from alton

I was referring to the damage of the motor. They replaced the motor and the gears it spins an the sheer coupling shaft.
It is hard to say what happened exactly but my best guess would be (looking at the broken bits) a tooth or peace of one came off the gear or motor spindle. There is nowhere for it to go in the housing so it got trapped in the gears which locked up the motor an over heated the pickup segments as two were fried.
Alton replaced all the damage items with no fuss an it's working ok again.
