Beautiful parts... too bad I have a belt and cut off primary!!! Hope this thing will take off ! Being on my 3rd Alton alternator on my Egli Vincent makes me "touchy" on Alton products and I'll wait a little to toss my belt drive (I live on a hill!!)

Are my eyes going bad because eye didn't see the primary chain tensioner? Is it still retained? Looks like a nice clean install. :D

guess you move the gearbox like on any Commando pre mk3?

As Prmurat says Alton alternators get mixed reviews on reliability, I will wait until Jim Comstock comes out with his timing gears and see if a starter can work with that setup.

Guys with weak legs take notice, the first 30 or so kits will be sent to the UK shortly destined for Norvil.

They are working on another kit with belts all around for those who want to get rid of their primary chain.

Hi Lads,

Any updates on Alton offering a kit for a MK3 Commando?

Before anybody comments about why? do a search for sprag gear problems

I've done the math & between getting a new sprag/gears, new starter motor, new cabling, new battery I'd be close to the existing price of an Alton kit.

Just curious if anybody knows if they are planning to do a kit for a MK3?

My logic is that the electric start on the MK3 was one of the first attempts by the british MC industry to install an ES. It has lots of flaws which I know you can improve on but the basic design, in my opinion, is not very elegant, I'm sure if they had of continued manufacturing the ES would have developed into a more robust, usable design. I'm hoping Alton has come up with a more robust design which utilises modern components which might be more reliable?

What is the main difference from a MKII to a MKIII? The Alton kit comes with a new inner primary cover and a new alternator. If the outer cover is different, you may have to get another one.

Re: Alton Electric Starter Conversion On Show at Stafford (U

MKII covers hav 3 mounting bolts, MKIII have 4. That would be the one difference in the inner cover. The MKIII also has the shift lever and shaft in it. That could be creativly worked around.

Re: Alton Electric Starter Conversion On Show at Stafford (U

I'm sure somebody with better engineering skills than me could make it work.

I'm strictly a bolt-on type of guy :D , I'd rather be riding my bike around than having it lying in bits in a workshop

Thanks for the replies

Holland Norton Works will also supply the Alton starter kit. I ordered mine 5 months ago but still they are not available :(
Any news?

Re: Alton Electric Starter Conversion On Show at Stafford (U

Should be available soon...

Why is the alternator not encrusted in epoxy like all the new types ?.

Because it is still not finalised, Alton is waiting on new more powerfull curved magnets for one and they are still deciding on final alternator strenght, for now the coils are protected by a baked resin which is very tough, once the final alternator power and configuration is finalised, it will be encased in plastic. Lucas provided alternators for years where the coils were only protected by varnish, even what is done so far by Alton is better in every respect. Time marches on and processes become better, not knocking Lucas, just mentionning that 50-60 years later things are better made with better materials and techniques.

Hello, anyone out there attempting to fit the Alton starter to a Dominator (or wanting to?)
I have been in contact last week with Paul about the (im)possibility to get the starter motor behind a upright cilinder.
My bike is a '62 slimline with a '72 Combat engine, Steve Maney belt & outrigger.
So far I have figured out that first step to do is getting the gearbox closer to the engine, Dominator distance is ± 28.5 cm between centres.
Commando is ? (anyone knows?)
I'll have to make new engine plates to get it closer -no problem there I think-
But....the upright engine dictates that the starter motor on its banana shaped gearhousing will have to turn clockwise.
Paul thinks it's a challenge, I think too ! so,....anyone having any bright ideas is more then welcome.
At Alton's they are just over their heads to get these starter kits ready for all those Xmas stockings, Paul has been very helpfull with comment, but before ordering one I would like to find out more.
Oh, and if need be I'll dump the Maney belt and revert (or maybe even upgrade...) to chain drive.
Thanks, Vincent
