Alton Electric Start

I notice the electric start is available in Australia now.
They look pretty good.
Has anyone tried one?

They had one demonstrator at the 2011 INOA Rally that I witnessed which started consistently and repeatedly.

I'm waiting for the belt drive version to get dialed in. Haven't seen one in person yet, but have read lots of good reviews.

There are several brands/sizes etc. of belt drives so this is a development issue as discussed at this year's National.

I sent an E-mail to Andover Norton on Sunday night regarding the belt drive versions of the Alton kit. I was told in a reply yesterday that Alton has worked out a solution to the problem and Andover will be receiving the kits in 3-4 weeks. I sent a similar request to Norvil about two weeks ago and have not received a reply. I have a Norvil belt drive on my Commando and saw the unit for the standard primary at the INOA meet in Vermont. I plan to buy the belt drive version as soon as it is available.

News flash: Altons website has confirmed that the belt drive versions are now available and to contact their authorized dealers.

I took delivery yesterday of the belt drive version, from hawkshaw Motorcycles in UK. The instructions are for the chain version, but I guess it isn't any different to install. Should be able to find time to fit it in the next week and will let you know how it goes.

There is an article in the latest NOC Roadholder mag. with some pics of the belt drive version fitted to a 920 MK2A with an RGM 32mm belt-drive.

I'll see if I can scan it in & post some pics later.

Whos belt drive are you using?

I have a 30mm wide Norvil belt.

Started to fit the unit today. There are two additional parts not shown in the instructions so I phoned Hawkshaw. They said an addendum to the instructions is coming from Alton but were able to tell me what these bits are for, so no problem. I then did a trial fit of the Alton inner primary case and found it would not sit flat on the engine crankcase. Discovered that the back of the motor gearbox on the rear of the chaincase fouls the rear of the engine crankcase. I am now in the process of relieving a bit of engine casing to provide the clearance needed.
A bit disappointed I need to do this but not a major problem.

On the Alton website there is mention of the kit being for a positive ground electrical system. Does anyone know if this is an absolute? And does anyone have the current pricing?

Expected "street" price will be $2,500 and the negative ground version is not available right now but it is coming.

The Positve ground could be an issue.
Along with others, I have converted my Norton to negative ground.
Can the system be used with a bike converted to neg. earth ?

Not the one for sale at the moment, a negative ground version is coming, but right now they are catering to the majority of Nortons, the ones with a stock wiring harness and positive ground.
