Alternator test ??

I am confused on the second half of the alternator test.I get the part with the test leads connected with a 1 ohm resistor in place. What I do not understand is
the test where the factory manual says (Any one lead and stator earth-ground NO READING).I do not understand how I am supposed to hook up the leads
Any help with my ignorance would be appreciated.Also,what does this test show?

Connect one meter lead to a stator wire, the other to earth/ground.

Any apparent voltage reading would indicate a short between the stator and ground.
