Hi I am just about to fit a Mikuni VM36 the kit came without an air filter I am going to go through the K & N specs when I get the kit (then I will know what space I have) but wondered if anyone could let me know what they have fitted. :?: I have a 74 850.

I had restricted breathing with the narrow K&N "pancake" - the only one that would fit the single VM at the frame junction. Get the biggest filter body you can get in there.I had to modify mine to get enough sustained flow over 5,000RPM. If you're chugging around under that, its fine.

Hi thanks I nearly bought one of those. Rough calculations I have done give a figure of about 18 sq in of flow area.

It's a pity they don't make that filter with the back chrome part as part of the filter element.

Answering my owm post but this filter is a great fit and has a suitable surface area...

Got a K&N part number for that?

I bought a pancake style K&N for my 36mm but would much rather have that cone I think.

K & N RC-0850 is a pancake style filter that fits on my 74. It's about 2 inches thick so may have more surface area than the other pancake-style filter that was mentioned.

That is the one I have I think. It is roughly 2" thick and seems slightly thicker than the other pancake filters I've seen guys like CNW use.

It's a pretty tight fit but it does fit. I haven't noticed any restriction of airflow at high rpms

Hi Its not a K & N filter its fitted to Yamaha XS 650's fitted with aftermarket Mikuni carbs. Sold in the US by http://www.mikesxs.net/products-40.html#products I have the 62 mm for my VM36 or by Heiden Tuning in the Netherlands
http://www.xs650.biz/p/36/mo74-cg|25=7/Air-Filters,-Fuel-Filters,-Carb-Holders

I should mention that the battery I use leaves a small space at the front of the battery tray, also have yet to run max rpm load testing to see if the airflow is suitable.
