I have the same breather on my '70 Commando and it is just fine. The engine does not leak oil, most of it comes out the the air filter.

A few more things that I would look at are: The camshaft, I had a soft lobe on mine, Lapping the oil pump to help with wet sumping, and Fitting 850 valve guides.

Good to hear your breather is not causing any issues.

The head and its components is one system that I will need to inspect to determine what needs attention. I previously read about camshafts showing premature wear. Was the 71 suspect?

Black Diamond valves and guides were are a product of one of the local machinists. I am going to see if he still is set up to do head work.

Yes, I had Memphis Motor install bronze valve guides and the valve seal that is not in the early bikes. Not cheap, but I don't have the tools to do head work.

Oil filter would be nice if you don't have one. RGM has them cheaper than even fleabay if you buy other items and share the shipping costs.

I like the idea of having an oil filter. Looks like a couple of different options on mounting them, and plenty of controversy on which one to chose.
Ah, more research to stress over!!

I mounted my filter on the engine cradle, just in front of the rear tyre. Wasn't a big issue, except I stripped one of the threads out of it by cross threading it, it's aluminum, so the bolt went in just fine until it wouldn't stop turning. Ugh. Helicoils are wonderful.
