While working on the NOC factory records project about ten years ago, Neville sent me a few copies of the hand written records pages. I see some numbers above 151000 that shipped in Dec '71. I'm not in front of that now and have to assume these numbers would still have been sold as '71 model year.
My 750 is number 1514xx, build date "OCT 1971" stamped on the ID tag, titled as a 1971 model. I don't know if that tag was the original, but it's pretty well-weathered.

Seems like there is little rhyme or reason to the numbers and dates.
I've got 1519XX with a date stamp of "SEP 1971", bike is titled as a 1972, but without a doubt aligns with the '71 parts manual. ID certainly seems like it is the original, engine and gearbox match.
Amen! The lists of serial numbers/build dates that are published are general guidelines, but are not very accurate. That goes for Commandos, P11's and probably others in the late '60-'70 range. Titles are also misleading as a new motorcycle was titled in most states by the date it was put in service, not by the model date.
