advice on front tire

+1 on the Avon Roadriders. After my bike sat for 20 years I was a bit tentitive getting back on and trying to keep up with my mates in the twisties. Now with 2500+ miles under my belt I have nothing but great things to say about these tires...they have absolutely transformed the bike's handling. I may not be able to stay right on my buddy's tail (Ducati 1000S), but I'm basically RIGHT THERE when we power out of the turns.

I find as the rear tyre starts to wear down the weave comes back, new tyre and its good again 1/2 worn and it starts wandering from the arse end, very noticable when sitting in a vehical slip stream.I love  the AVON AM 26 ROAD RIDERS same front and rear, havn't quite been able to scuff the writting on the edge of the tyre yet but Iam still trying.

For what it's worth, I've raced with Avon Super Venom's on both my BMW and my Manx in race compound and never had a problem with weave at any speed. I'd run a Dunlop if I could but race compound Dunlop's are not available here in 19" rear.

I've also done a track day on one of my bikes with DOT compound Road Rider's. I found that on the street they were a bit 'twitchy' compared to the Metzler's that I used to run on the bike, but on the track at speed they were superb. However, on the track when they got heated up they started getting a little 'squishy' feeling in the turns. I chalked that up to the street compound not having the temperature stability of the race tire.

Again, just my experience with them.

@Ludwig: How old is this test in "motorblaadje" ? It always surprises me that often you can't find when an article was printed. Amazing also that they didn't test any Avon tyres.
Thanks for the link though. There are certainly some other interesting articles to read.

I just went back to Avons after 5 years on BT45 as I wanted the 90 width on the front that Bridgestone don't do. It's been a while since I had two new tyres and boy did they feel weird at low speed, like the bike wanted to fall over at the slightest steering input. 200 mioles now and getting used to them.
Getting back to the "quote" I went to the Goodwood revival Friday and lots of the bikes (Manx and Matchless singles) including Wayne Gardners were running AM20/AM18/AM26 combinations. Gardner's were totally frazzled front and back but if they're good enough for an ex 500 champ!! I've only ever managed to rough up the front tyre a little, so it puts it into perspective how easy some of us are on tyres on the road even if we think we're pushing on a bit.
