A late 72 journey out of hibernation (2020)
 
The Norvil tech talk says change the filter every 5,000 miles. The mk3 service manual says every 3,000.

I don't know if oil filters are a standard length, but have seen, somewhere on YouTube, a Commando oil filter grazing the swing-arm, so the hole position might need double checking.

The PO may have been having oil control issues when bike has a road tube fitted.....
74 was local, I made an offer and boom!
Hey what is the name of the shield around the needle jet in the venturi and is it advisable to change to the notched or slant cut ones?

It's called a spray tube
If you have a notched spray tube you should have the 4 ID rings on the needle
You can use a flat top spray tube but you'll need needles with 2 iD rings
I think the sloping spray tubes are for two strokes
And the half sloping are for tridents
Someone will hopefully correct me if I'm wrong

Original 850 carbs should have the notched (stepped) 928/107 spray tubes and 4 ID ring (not the clip grooves) 928/104 needles.

ODO shows 31K, these carbs appear "new".
don't have the notch will have to check the needles.
bores have cross hatching yet PO claims only hundreds of miles on a bore job but no paperwork.

Trying to get the LH cylinder some compression is at the top of the list, got the carbon flakes off the intake valve and seat, air in the plug hole shows the exhaust valve now the major culprit so scrubbing the exhaust next up, now making an exhaust nut wrench.

If "new" replacements (932/?? LH/RH) and they have flat-topped spray tubes and 2 ID ring needles then as baz said, there's probably no actual need to change those parts.
 
Over year has passed the 850 head is still waiting it's turn at James' place.
Got tired of wandering by the 750 mutt, dug it out, did some fuel system butchery, that lead to replacing coils with an Accel 140403 dual tower, making gas tank on off much easier.

Starting is reasonable now also, mebby three kicks cold, Mikuni doesn't have a primer. A couple inches of lever fires it off once warm.
Very much a work in progress; 23 yea old rubber has to go. But put a good 50 smiles of riding enjoyment on. So far gotta say loving the Mikuni single carb.
