To Quote from Legendary car ( oops ) Engines , by john simster , which is probly illegal & imoral , or Amoral ?? .

" Micheal McCormick , who has been with stanley Mann for thirty years (' im on probation ' he says ) adds

that a modern oil filter is a wise fitment especially if you want to use modern detergent oil , which ' picks up
all the muck ' . And that it would be death to an engine with shell bearings , be they late originals or a
later conversion . Otherwise , a non - detergent oil such as castrol GP 50 is the favoured lubricant . "

this is from Chapter Four = Bently 4 1/2 - litre .

Less juvinile members amongst us may well recall the introduction of ' detergent Oils ' and the oaths muttered
due to the release of deposits and catastrophic results , many of the Engine Reconditioners made there fortunes
in the ensueing debacle .

The inferance drawn from above should be obvious . The Oil carries the contaminants , which are removed by the Filter ( Element / pleated paper ) .

In the case of detergent oils .

Thus , No modern ( pleated / cartridge ) filter , No Detergent Oil . would appear the logical concusion .

1. when detergent oil introduced the old cars it was added to had good thick sludge layers built up by then and would come off in chunks big enough to clog passages, so the bad reputation of detergent oil myth began and the wives tales give it life yet.

2. Oil filters only filter particles big enough to eventually clog passages and do little to filer the smaller friction-wear particles that can fit in and zip roughly though the tight spinning spaces.

3. Nothing wrong going filterless as Nortons and other vintage engined designed for it.

4. If not an engine with ancient sediments then good to run detergent oil in our blow by prone old things > then dump it when carrying enough of the engine sluff off and cooked up hydrocarbons, instead of false security of oil filter protection.

5. Oil filters even on cars don't need changing with each oil change. I change my Combat about every couple years whether it needs it or not. Look into your filters for your own observations and attitudes or search up others findings.
