Hi, all. I'm new to the forum and am looking for some advice. A neighbour has a 1966 Norton Atlas for sale. The only drawback is that the bike is completely disassembled, except for the engine, which is complete.

What should I look for to make this a decent purchase, and what do you think the values might be? I have 30-plus years in the mechanical trades, so I'm not too worried about the project. I just want to make sure the bike is complete and not damaged. Are there any frame issues that I should look for, engine and frame numbers? Do they use standard hardware or some odd British fasteners? Much thanks in advance for any advice.

Cheers, G

Where in the world are you, value changes with country. What paperwork does it come with, title or V5 or even logbook.

A 1966 Norton Atlas uses British Standard Cycle (BSC or BSCy or CEI) hardware, which is a British Imperial screw thread standard. Some other threads were used for shafts, axles, and threads in aluminum. Hex heads are for Whitworth tools mostly. Allen heads use an imperial tool standard as well.

gnmgerbs; In my experience it is the little things that go missing when a bike becomes a basket case. Restorations provide the greatest level of potential frustrations. On the other hand a nice ‘rider’ can bypass “originality” issues and be more made to fit you. A well sorted Atlas is a very nice machine. Mark
