Today I took the 2 3/4 hour journey to long Island to see my long awaited 961SF. It had been fitted with a Prototype Performance Exhaust and a CRG bar end mirror per my request. The temp was a sunny 38 degrees but I did manage to put 23 miles on her, I was not cold because of pure adrenaline, but the roads and drivers sucked, it was Black Friday. She was gorgeous of course. The bike is a bit cold blooded and you must slightly crack or blip the throttle at this cold temp for a minute or 2 and with only 5 factory and 2 PDI miles showing on the clock. My first plus was the bike sounded great with the Performance pipes, not so much with the stockers. The sound was almost Ducati like! The second plus was that there was not as much mechanical noise as some of the YOUTUBE Vids of earlier bikes and what was there dissapeared at about 2800 RPM's. There was a mild engine vibration that dissapeared at 2800 RPM and the motor just became smoother and smoother as the revs grew! The third plus was that despite earier reports on 2010-2011 models of notchy shifting and questionable clutches my bike shifted smoothly though it took some time to find neutral reliably. I went back and forth several times on whether to get the CR with clip ons or not but I can only ride my 2006 Sport Classic for 35-45 minutes comfortably hence the low barred SF, and my fourth plus is that this bike is comfortable enough to probably ride the gas tank dry which is as comfortable as it needs to be! Live and Learn though I understand the CR is not as extereme a riding position as some! The suspension was absolutely plush and precise for my 185 lbs. despite earlier reports of stiffness on the initial setup. I would definitely jack up the preload for track use though, maybe next Spring when its warmer. The fifth plus is that this motor ( remember I only road the optional pipes ) is
super what I would call "tractible" ; you can ride it like a cruiser with your Harley friends or crank it up and be a play-racer with your cafe/sport friends! You do not have to ride at 7tenths or 8tenths for it to feel "right" or be fun ! A Thruxton is not quite enough for me and this bike was probably more then enough, they say it will beat a Sport Classic but I am not sure yet! Do not ask about absolute handling because with the cold temps and "mold release" still on the tires I did not push it very much but the bike is very slender, quick to turn in, and I am sure will handle great for a retro-bike ! The brakes are super powerful and one finger is plenty for the front. The minuses were few and minor. First the non-spring loaded footpegs are a PIA as reported in earlier reviews, especially in stop and go traffic. If you brush a peg with your boot it goes up and stays up till you find it with your toe and push it back down! I had less trouble after a few miles and those that only ride on a track or in the twisties will not complain as much, but someone needs to make a kit to fix this! Second, the side stand on my bike put it in a near vertical position and a gust of wind or uneven ground will have the bike tip over!! My dealer is going to look at the stop and see if this can be adjusted or if there is a fix, as they are not going to deliver the bike till they have a full truck headed my way ( North ) and will have time to look at it. Worst case I will cut a 1/2" off the leg and re-weld. Thats it for the minuses on my very short ride, I hope the weather holds and they deliver this before they salt the roads but at least I can say I road her !

Ps Thanks to Brit Twit ( Fred ) for info and assistance`

961 FIRST RIDE

We have one here in Toronto ,same silver ,very nice and beautifull, yet when I heard the youngwhipper$napper -owner fire it up at the Mods n' Rockers rally ,the loud clacketty tickings from the valve-train caused me to put down my beer and talk a bit. Forgot his name but mumbled something about servicing it. My impression was he's not mechanically inclined and hope he took it in for head re-torque from new $tate and subsequent valve adjustments.

Mine was relatively quiet and all extra mechanical noise stopped at 2800 rpm. Of course the louder pipes helped and she does have less then 30 miles on her but I hope she stays like this or gets better with some miles! The vids of the 2010- 2012 models did not sound good!

Well if these bikes show up more often then L.A.B. might have to make a “New Post Section” for the 961 Commandos.
Enjoy your new ride.
Christmas came early.
Cheers,
Thomas

I don't actually have the authority to make such changes, Jerry is The Boss Man! :)

Edit: Jerry thinks it's a good idea, so a new Access Norton "961" forum section should be appearing shortly, when Jerry gets around to it.

I, for one, don't mind hearing about the deliveries or anything else on these bikes Afterall, for a long time there was a ton of negative posting on here, including one "expose"from a magazine employee. I dont think anyone suggested making a separate forum for all the complaining and hackjobs on the concept of these bikes, but now they have proven the naysayers wrong and the bikes are happening,we musn't read about it?
Of course bring on both the pros and cons, if they are junk let's hear about it!

Glen

Thanks for the first ride impression BPHORSEGUY, enjoyed reading about your new bike and it looks good in the picture from that angle, hope you get it before old man winter arrives in your neck of the woods. Cj

No need for a separate forum. We already have the "Motorcycle Related Discussions" forum. The perfect place for the 961, Motorcycle Laws, MKIII's and any bikes yellow in color. :p It is great to know that there is someplace special where I can go to read about all these topics and more without cluttering up unrelated areas of the website.

Great idea Pete!

We could also shift all of the single Mikuni equipped bikes over to that section and maybe the Shorai equipped bikes as well, just to minimize distraction from pure Commandos 8)

Nice report. We had one show up at Mods n Rockers this summer, owner seemed quite happy with it.

I'm not very interested in the new commando, however I had to read this. It sounds as though the new bike is a very good starting point, and has no vices or difficulties which cannot be easily overcome. Thanks for posting and enjoy your purchase.

Thanks for the report, looks GREAT. As for the suggestion of another forum, we'll it is a COMMANDO, similarly to WIDOW MAKERs, JPNs, COMBATs, ET AL!!!!
Keep the reports coming , I at least wish to read them.

Sounds like youd grind a smidgeon of the front of the stand at the pivot , where it buts against the stop / lug on the frame .
Rather than carveing a bit of the motorcycle /.

Just shortening it is going to leave it at the ' near centre ' posn , where a shove trips it up . further overcenter would need
more of a shove to unseat it , all things considered .

No throttle on the stop till first sevice 7 retourque , at least . Please .

Then we expect a full track report with on board camera . :p 8) then we can send you off to the Isle of Mann ,
if you fit some number plates .  :!: or are there roads like that in your neigbourhood . :D

Exactly,a forum for drum brake Fastbacks only.

That 961 is a great looking bike,it will be interesting to see how they go as a tourer.
Are there any reports of them with reasonable mileage on the clock or is it to early still.

not so much but hey....

It's the completion of Kenny Dreer's dream Commando, that's what it is.

There aren't roads like that in my neighborhood but they are a lot better then where I was for the first ride. Also there is a switch on the stand that kills the engine if you try to put it in gear with the stand down so I must be carefui moving the rotation, I don't have it to look at it though so can't make an assesment!

The US spec bikes are just being uncrated now, I have seen Uk bikes with 5000 miles on them and that is about all!
