I'm getting ready to put the top end together on my 74 850 rebuild. The cylinders have been bored +20 and I gave the new pistons to the machinist and requested he measure them and to hone the bores to .0045 clearance. Pistons are Emgo and rings are Hastings. As far as I can see the pistons have no cutouts. Does it matter which direction they face or which cylinder you use them in.
The machinist didn't mark the pistons for a specific bore. Is there any quick and dirty way to check the clearance to see if one fits a little better in one bore than the other. I don't have a reliable bore gauge, could feeler gauges be used. I guess I could take it back to the machinist to have him verify the measurements but it's a pretty good drive.

Well I mark the pistons as I fit them if I can measure a difference -but I have noticed that the constancy of the machining on the Emgo/Jcc pistons is so good that there is virtually no measurable difference -so you are likely safe either way. Jim

Thanks Jim, that's probably why he didn't mark them. So it's correct that there is no prefered direction to the 850 pistons?

That is correct. Jim
