If you're changing the rims, I would definitely go to WM4 or 2.5". Avon recommend this size for their 100/90 Roadriders to make the profile correct. Anything else is a compromise. Good handling and light steering.

Comments anybody? While I would love a set of the JS rods & pistons (plus a raft of other goodies!), that's rather over the current budget. Instead of buying the JS valve train, I would rather get the crank balanced.

/Steve in Copenhagen.
I know that if I go through the trouble of splitting the case again and going deep, It will be hard not to add the JS rods and pistons.
It's been a few years now since I added the JS1 and the BSA lifter kit, so I will pull the top end to see how its wearing in. If I feel I need to bore to the next size up, I will probably go for it.

Fast Eddie, you mention that dynamic balancing should be mandatory on a rebuild. I will be rebuilding my motor shortly and will only be using it as a road bike. What balance factor would you suggest?
Thanks, David

Personally I'd stick with the stock balance factor on the basis that I don't know any better.

However, you may benefit from starting a new thread asking this question. There are far more knowledgable Nortonista on this topic than I, and there are (considerable) differing opinions.

My point is that, irrespective of your chosen factor, it must still be dynamically balanced IF you want it to be right.

All only IMHO of course.

Where in the world are you? If in UK, I can highly recommend Basset Down for dynamic balancing.

Hi

Basset Down have always done my balancing work & my Nortons are smooth.
Little story. Not Norton but an eye opener.
Sent my triple to Paul as I was putting the basis of a race engine togeather as per period.ie 72 TH6 cams. works pistons & 6lb of the crank. I was using new old stock rods (real triple race engines to todays spec cost mega bucks) I wanted something fast & smooth as I know I cant match the Norths so intended doing Beezumph & classic parades. Anyway Paul phones me up extremely agitated & wants me to send hime some more rods!!!!! Well I did.
Turns out one of my rods needed two!!! set of nuts to balance them up with the other two!.
I have been told that rods were made by more than one contractor but jesus how bad would that engine have been!

Scary!

Sorry for my tardy response Fast Eddie, I am in Melbourne, Australia. Thanks guys for the recommendation. I will use the chap in Melbourne who balanced my Royal Enfield Interceptor crank.

Why would you change your balance factor away from standard if you have the isolastics, unless you intend to continually rev the tits off the motor ?
