By that time I would have expected them to have gone to a Block stamp, ie you make the number up with the digits in a solid frame and its applied with one hit by a press rather than the single hand held stamps. In that case you should have the digits all level with even stamping as shown on NickZ's example, this also matches my own 206*** cases. That says its not factory applied stamp but if dealer applied I would not be expecting the dots GP refers to and can be seen.
 
Just for information my first 850 Mk1 interstate that I had for many years had the 750 type small sump plug. I wish I still had that bike number 304759. Two guys from Lincolnshire bought it early 1990s when I was in Barnsley, Hell Angel's type lads.
 
Could also be a set of replacement cases. Dealers could get new, non numbered cases for rebuilds back then. Stamp any number you like on them.
