850 Carb Issue?

My 850 had recent issues and I installed new Boyer ignition. Now it starts great and idles fine and will rev in neutral like it should.
Issue is that when starting to ride, it just bogs down and doesn't clear up. Like running on one cylinder. The left tickler won't "overflow" and let fuel run out of the carb like the right side will. Could this be the problem? Like maybe the float is staying down and the carb gets flooded? I went through the carbs last month and also had a better mechanic than myself do the same. Maybe we missed something?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Steve

1. Did it have the same bog down issue with the previous ignition? If not, what was the 'problem' that caused you to install the Boyer?

2. Did you change anything re the carbs when you changed to the Boyer?

No, did not bog down previously. It had gotten very hard to start so I replaced the original coils and added the Boyer to bring it a little more up to date. At the same time the carbs were disassembled and passages were cleaned twice. I use both petcocks all the time. Before, both ticklers generated gas overflow, now only the right side. Makes me think that might be the problem, but I'm far short of an Amal expert.

Check to see if fuel is even getting into the left carb by removing the central drain bung

Troubleshoot...

WHY is the tickler not operating as expected....
Search....
Clogged inlet screen?
Etc.....

Hi Blue,
It sounds like you are having some change in the carburetor, but also be aware that if you overall system voltage sags much , it can really compromise the performance of a Boyer. I had a Boyer on my MKIII and the electric starting pulled the system down momentarily and made the Boyer want to kick back and misfire. I would check your system voltage when revving off of idle to see that your alternator is boosting the system voltage as it should , like 13.5 to 14.5v DC .

You can check the floats for leaks by immersing then in hot water.

Well, finally got the left tickler to work--just takes 10 seconds, or so. Still runs rough. It's getting fuel and the charging is fine. Next step is to take the carbs apart again and see if something is amiss. Will verify the floats are ok at the same time. Thanks for the input!

Everything checked out fine, EXCEPT, the left side carb needle had come out of the retaining clip that holds it in place. I've never seen this happen before! Thanks again for the suggestions. It runs like new now!

Steve

Good News. I have had that happen when dropping in the slide assembly - it is not possible in my ham can set up to hook the needle forward to engage the needle jet (previous K&N filters made it easier). Now I take the carbs off completely to do any work on them.
