I’m rebuilding my 71 Commando ( for the third time) and have oil leaking from the front side between the head and barrels. I’ve got a new head gasket 06-3844 but unsure which way should be up. Lettering on one side and nothing on the other. Anyone know or does it matter?

Often when it appears that oil is leaking from a head gasket it is really oil migrating up a head bolt from the pushrod tunnel. Factory machining of the bore and threads of the two head bolts in proximity to the pushrod tunnels often broke through the thin wall separating them. It usually is visible inside the pushrod tunnel when the head is removed. There have been discussions of this on this forum as well as using a reed valve to vent the crank cases eliminating the pressure which forces the oil out.
