Hi Chaps , I am just about to start sorting my 750 fastback
I'm fitting a new ignition and was thinking of trying a single tm 34 flat slide carb hoping for better performance than a vm 34 or 36 mm but less faff than refitting a new pair of amals
so my question is have any of you fine fellows had a go with this set up ? if son how did it work for you.
Best regards Chris

Better low speed performance.
Same top end performance.
Slide tended to stick when riding in the rain... Jim

The TM is a much better performer than a VM , i have used several single carb configurations including a 34 and 36 VM but performance is lackluster ,i fitted a 40 TM and was amazed by the difference ,but you need a big inlet manifold and you have to cut a piece out of the gusset on the frame if using the 40,not sure about the 36 though, cheers

Can I ask what you are running now ?

Electronic fuel injection. I will never go back to carbs with today's fuel.

Quite a few years ago I replaced a single VM34 with a TM34. It carbureted a little better down low but the top end was the same. And it would stick if I rode it in the rain or fog.

Then I went to twin TM43's. It ran great but then both carbs would stick when it got wet.

I mostly cured the sticking by glass beading the teflon from the slides and recoating them with MDSO2 piston coat, but it wore off pretty quickly. Chrome slides would be the thing to use in them if they are available. Jim

what fall off, assuming that is what faff means?

source for this information, thanks

"Faffing about" is English slang for "messing about" "doing unnecessary work" that sort of thing.

My 75 850 MKIII came with a Mikuni VM 34. I changed it to a TM 34.

The TM "seems" to idle smoother. It responds to throttle faster. It took a bit to get it tuned (jetted) correctly. With a single carb performance is compromised to begin with so not important to me if there was a difference.

I'm not trying to derail this thread topic but I had to laugh to myself when I read the above explanation. Being born and raised in Houston, Texas to immigrant English parents, it made me think that while I speak English, I really don't speak English... because I had no idea what faff was and thought it was a "typo". I'm currently on a contract job in Iraq and the British 4rifles were just replaced by the Highlanders here at the base where I'm working----I can't understand those guys at all. :?
