Hey all. Looking for a little advice. Took my mk3 out for a hard 500 mile weekend. Mid ride a noticed some oil weeping around the shifter. On further inspection I noticed the shift has some play/slop in it. The play is not where the shifter attaches, that is on good and tight, the play is the assembly protruding from the crankcase. Normal? Easy fix? Where can the be adjusted. Thanks

Crankcase, or primary cover?

Yes. (primary case) The cross shaft assembly joint wears, so eventually develops a lot of play.

Yes. Replace worn parts.

It's the splines of the cross shaft (066187), connector (065607) and gearbox pawl carrier shaft (065216) which wear. Unfortunately there is no way to adjust out the play, the cure is to replace the worn parts. Replacing the cross shaft and coupling may be enough to significantly reduce the amount of play and also replace the pawl carrier if not.

Replacing the cross shaft bush (065185) in the outer cover can also help to reduce the amount of play.

Unfortunately several of the MKIII's I have worked on have been dropped on the shifter side and what a lot of MKIII owners don't know is that this is a rather tender area. The result is that the boss on the inside of the primary cracks. The shifter gets sloppy because the shifter bush looses support. I welded one and had to make a fixture to remachine the outer primary. Actually it seems to me that more are cracked than are good....

The other replys do cover some of the normal wear points and are fully worth investigating, but few look so close as I do and the cracking problem is easy to over look.
