'74 Daytona layshaft bearing fit ?

The problem with the kickstart dropping back on acceleration appears to be to a bad needle bearing in the kickstart shaft. About half of the outer lip was broken away and some of the rollers were out of position axially (~1/16"). The manual says to heat the k/s shaft to 100C and whack it on a wood block to get the bearing to drop out. It would not (even at 350F).

The new bearing is a Torringtom B-1012 (o.d. 13/16" or 0.8125"). The specs for the bearing say that the hole should be 0.8120" to 0.8130". I'm measuring 0.810" for the hole in the k/s shaft. Is this the right bearing ?

It is the right bearing, the hole sounds undersize but as the bearing and the shaft are both steel heating will not give much increase in clearance. To remove the needle bearing you can use a puller made from a coach bolt, you can see it being used here, the rollers need to be pulled out first which is actually easy.

Coach bolt is no doubt not what it is called in NA, it is a dome headed bolt with a short 1/4" square section under the domed head, rest of the shaft is threaded. You have to file 2 sides of the domed head until it will go into the needle roller bearing at a 45 degree angle but will not come out when straight

Thanks for the info adn the tip. We call them carriage bolts.

I'd got the bearing out. The first few times I whacked it on the bench, all the needles fell out. I screwed a 3/4" NC tap through the lip on the back side and pulled it out with a nut and washer (same technique as for a Norton, except they use a bushing). Do you suppose if the hole were undersize it would cause the bearing to fail ?

The small hole would cause the bearing to fail but as the needle roller is thinwall it would also results in a tight fit and the shaft and wear here too. Go to a local machine shop and get them to run a 13/16" reamer down the hole.
