When I try to shift from 2nd to 3rd it is like the lever is not connected to anything. If I fiddle around with it a little, it will shift into 3rd. Shifting from 1-2, 3-4 and every down shift is fine. Any ideas what is happening ?

Thanks

Greg

Before you start pulling the gearbox apart check that your clutch and primary chain are correctly adjusted.
It sounds like it could be the little curved springs in the outer case. (Thats assuming that the 500s are the same as the 650s)
Should only take about 30 minutes to replace them.

Good Luck

There actually straight . they only appear curved , or broken .sometimes .

Check the index plunger spring ( underneath ) is to specs , while youre at it .
Thats what locates the camplate ( in gear) weak , itll throw out ( of gear ) .

worth checking for burrs and flatness in the positive stop mechanism ( with the straight curved springs ) while youve got it off.
Gear lever maybe wobbles up and down a bit off from centre , if ones gone . Feels sticky to the toe .

Late camplates have reinforceing straps across to avoid distorting from officer dibbles boot . I.E. camplates can spread , leaving accuracy displaced .

pretty easy to whip the cover ( inner ) off & hose out / check for scrap metal .Leaving the rest in situ.
