Rebuilding a basket case 74 850, the parts in basket was primary chain and clutch parts. Have bought all parts and ready to assemble. The Manuel calls for first plate to have dowells to fit into housing. I found nothing like that. The original owner did tell me that it would have to be shimmed. Have 5 plates and new 5 Bartlett friction plates. Measured the plates and last outer plate = 1. 167...is the first plate with the Dowell required?

Perhaps it relates to the steel disc in the bottom of the basket which is held in place by three non removable rivets (of sorts) on the 850 and by two removable roll pins on 750's.

This the 750 if so, the 850 has the same disc but fixed.

The manual is referring to the early assembly which had a separate backplate secured by dowels.

As TW says, your '74 clutch drum should have the later riveted-in backplate, item 41.

Edit: Note that the dowel holes are there in the riveted plate but aren't used.

Tks for your time

If I might ask a question, is there a trick on putting on primary chain on. It new and 92 links. Putting on the sprocket and clutch housing it would seem I need to stretch it about a quarter inch and not sure how to stretch a chain...anyway stay safe

You need to move the gearbox closer to the drive sprocket. The procedure is detailed in the workshop manual.

p.s. Move the rear wheel forward first so you don't stress the drive chain.
