Pulled the breather off the '72 and there was no gauze or sponge inside just the large screens. Why would the po have done this? Is it ok to run w/o it? Wouldn't oil be pushed up the breather hose? ScrAtching my head. Thanx Rick

Mine only has the large screen. What sponge? Oil going up the breather on a stock "combat breather" is a normal thing. :) The down side is it doesn't go through the filter (if you have one) first.

What sponge? the one the factory put in  Well its in the parts list anyway, seems the idea was for the oil mist to condense on the sponge and then drain back, in their dreams me thinks.

That's the Combat oil return for high speed work!!

This is just great. We got a breather with a useless strainer and an oil pickup with nothing. Maybe the strainer on the breather was to keep crap from coming in since it panted like a dog in heat. Before the inline check they would suck and blow, now they just blow. Here comes a new tread.

Sounds like a. Jet engine: suck, squeeze, burn, blow. Reckon I'll run w/o the gauze/sponge/whatever the he'll was supposed be in there
