...And removed by owners at the earliest opportunity it would seem as a Mk3 that still has the separator and hoses is a rare thing.

I kept the separator but disconnected the small hose off the bottom that went to the balance hose on the carb manifolds. I then inserted a hose barb on the bottom of the separator and attached a drain hose. This way oil tank vapors still get pulled into the air box and condensates drain out the bottom. Once or twice a year I clean the hose and depending on the weather I will get nothing or an oil/water mix.

While I await the return of the tinware from the painter and also await the weekend to restart the Commando after re routing the plumbing to the oil tank I thought it time to make up a talisman as I have on my other bikes .
A bit of history first to explain . My mother was the youngest of 5 children and the only one born in the USA . Her family emigrated here from Tonsberg , Norway around 1919 or thereabouts . The family held a belief that after passing the deceased would signal to the living by leaving a dime for them.
As a very young child I recall my mother looking for dimes after her mother died in our home , succumbing to cancer - the same cancer that would eventually claim both my mother and her older sister.
After my mother's passing my older sister took up the torch with the family superstition regarding dimes and indeed we all began to find them at uncanny times of both happiness and sadness.
I am not a superstitious person but who knows ? It's fun to play along and a nice way to remember a wonderful and beautiful woman.
The dimes found at these times are never spent but put in special places and I keep them on all my bikes . I mounted one on a handlebar tidy clip for my ES 2 and turned up a bezel out of a scrap of bronze for the Commando , to be mounted in the vacant hole left from the steering lock . The dime was silver soldered to the bezel and all fastened through the hole with a threaded rod and castelated bronze ring nut.

Thanks NPeteN - yes, my Mom was a beautiful woman and passed her genes on - my sister is still a stunning woman at 72 - she , too has had her battle with cancer but has beat it -and I have two beautiful daughters.
I would do a Mercury dime with a 1950 date - if my mom sends me one !
I restarted the Commando today - lit up on the first kick with good immediate oil return to the tank . I think the right cylinder is a little lean so have to explore that .

Neat tradition, just wondering if it is always tails up, ah the dimes that is, um when you display them? They look great on the bikes, nice craftsmanship.

Thanks - No significance to the tails side - I just think it more attractive.

Reposting my query here that I just posted today under Norton Commando Classics -
My right side exhaust pipe has discolored immediately after only the briefest of running in . Timing is spot on and cylinder head temperatures are within a couple of degrees of each other left to right as measured with an infrared temp gauge . The pipes are brand new and purchased together as a pair.
Thin chrome or wall thickness on right pipe ?
Any ideas ?

Deus vult… It certainly can't be from a mistake as meticulous as you are.

I have received word from the painter that the priming / blocking is nearly done and all components should be ready for paint in a day or two ... Christmas just got a little closer .. stay tuned .

Thanks for that.... I was over 50 when I lost mine... He had been my best friend for many years, and for many before though I was too damned young and stupid to realize it.... Sometime things just hit home.

Certainly your detail work is impeccable; the highest quality. I am of a type that feels it is more proper to say that your mother possessed the type of classic beauty that is rarely seen today in what is considered "beautiful". Very pure.

By all means! I am waiting on the new wing spars so that I can disassemble everything and begin the restoration rebuild. What you see so far is just the mock-up of the basket case I was given. I determined which parts needed replacing due to damage or missing altogether, and which new fasteners I'd need to get it all back together properly. Sails have been repaired, and prop was rebuilt, both by pros...

i discovered this really beautifully made aluminum flask from Amazon - GSI Outdoors IIRC. Just the thing for a catch bottle / puke tank for the oil tank breather. I may be a little premature in posting this as I do not have the side covers back from the painter yet but I believe it will fit in front of the battery if it interferes with the side cover.


$ 28. all in - not bad . If interested I will post the Amazon item number.
