Is there a video out there showing the rebulding of the rear drum assm on 71 up?? As we know the maint manual leaves alot to be desired as far as the vodoo going on in the left side of the rear wheel. Is the backing plate supposed to be a lil loose/jiggly when the wheel is removed. The L/side dummy axle nut is tight. I'm just going over the bike to make sure it's ready for riding season while waiting for pistons to arrive. Thanks all.

You may find this drawing helpful. Try this search:
The thread is titled "Front and Rear Hub Bearing Removal(2010)"
and post# 25. Sorry, I don't know how to attach directly.

No.
The L/side dummy axle nut is tight.

Then something appears to be wrong.
Possibly an incorrect thin washer under the nut as the nut can then run out of thread before the assembly is tight.

Nope, the backing plate does wobble a bit even when the stub axle nut is snugged up. For the life of me I cant figure out how the d**n drum comes off the brake backing plate to check if I assembled the stub axle correctly or left a shim/washer on the workbench. Sad, because I rebuilt this about 4yrs ago and can't remember how. (it sucks to slowly lose your mind...) 😣

You need to remove the complete assembly from the swingarm then remove the brake plate from the drum.

Got it off. lol! I remember putting a new lever return spring on it when I last messed with it, that sucker had it in a bit of a bind and I'm always leery for prizing or beating on assemblies to take them apart but a light smack with the rawhide mallet popped it apart. I'm missing the washer between the dummy axle and the inside of the brake back plate, itm# 21. Anyone know the thickness of that washer/spacer so I can fire up the lathe and make another??
Thanks soooooo much for your patience and insight.

Washer #21 is "AR" = As Required (prevents the plate or sides of the shoes from rubbing against the drum?). If it didn't have one then it probably doesn't need one. The lack of washer #21, therefore, should not be the cause of the brake backplate being loose.

Edit: Although thinking about it some more, the additional thickness of the washer (really a shim) might also assist in clamping a loose back plate.

"OUTSIDE DIAMETER: 1.256 1 1/4" (32MM)
INSIDE DIAMETER: .858 (21.8MM)
THICKNESS: .025" (.6MM)"

Found the culprit, all good now.... big burr on outter washer preventing tightening all the way up. Fab'd up new outter washers and everything snugged up properly. Now on to that dead horn since the rear wheel is off! LOL:rolleyes:
Thanks all!
