Does anyone remember how the oil cap was finished on the early 69-70 models? I had painted mine black at one point and have now removed all the paint, but don't remember how it was originally finished. I was thinking about plating it with nickel or chrome, but I can't get it apart and it would probably be a mess to plate the whole assembly at once.

Hi Dave
Looking in my original 'S' type riders handbook, Illustration 6 shows the oil filler cap. It looks as if it is plated and polished - looks like chrome in the picture. It certainly is not painted.

Thanks Matt. Do you suppose it could have been cad plated? I can't believe I would have removed chrome to paint it black, and there appears on mine there is no coating at all except for the inside part which looks to be plated with something. I guess I'll try to plate it with something chrome like.

Hi Dave
I think it must have been cad or zinc - on the one off my 71 (albeit not the same part nmber as yours) I'm pretty sure it was not chromed but it was badly corroded. I can't find it at the moment (post rebuild garage clearout needed) and I've just tried to scan in the picture from the handbook and that doesn't show it either. Doh.

I was inspecting my cap a bit closer today, and it appears to have some cad plating on it, but it us pretty worn off from scraping off the paint and sanding it. I think I will take the sander to it, get it to bare metal and plate it with the Caswell Copy-Chrome which I have been using on other things. It will probably look a bit messy on the inside because I don't want to take it apart.

Thanks,
Dave
