Hi everyone, finished the tank now :)

what shade or finish of black paint does everyone use around the norton lettering on the slimline tank badges?

Thanks in advance,

Tom

Motorcycles and frames often come in black, so the same black as used elsewhere on your bike ?
They are easy to get at, and redo if necessary, so any convenient rattlecan black would probably do at a pinch.
Getting it to stick securely to chrome may be a little tricky, so an etch primer may be needed onto the chrome first.

Course, any car paint guy could probably do this, in a professional type paint, at vast expense...

I wouldn't want to use etch primer on nice chrome badges, I find that Smoothrite straight to metal black paint by Hammerite is good. I'm in the same position, I had my badges rechromed and haven't painted the badge black yet, not sure how to do it and make a good job of it. I have seen original pictures with it painted and lots without. It looks to me like it came in later.

When I did my 650ss I had the strips rechromed. When it came to painting I gave the outside faces a really good clean with acetone, then shellite, and hand painted the required bits with a small brush. Easy peasy. I know that there are those who enjoy complicating things but this is the best and by far the easiest way. From memory I used Humbrol enamel, the stuff you can get (still) in tiny little tins from your local hobby shop. Get a decent small brush at the same place. Probably cost 10 or 12 dollars per tank.
I'm sure you could make it harder, more expensive, but why!
cheers
