50th anniversary Cafe Racer

The need to carry loads of bits, plus the fact it’s not road legal until 1st March meant it was a van job to collect.

Spent 2 hours at the factory, was really impressed with the overal set up.
Got to see this years TT bikes being built too!

Anyway, here she is, sorry to the others on here, but here’s one in the RIGHT colour!

The eagle eyed may spot some abnormalities like the old style one piece front mudguard and lack of pinstripes on the seat unit. These were both requests of mine that the factory did for me.

I really like the way the seat unit looks sans stripes as whatever you do with stripes on the dual seat unit looks kinda odd to me.

Pics don’t do it justice, will take some better ones soon.

Oh yeah, I thought you were all being old women moaning about the lack of steering lock, but now I see what you mean !

Welcome to the party with a very nice bike - they sound so good with the short pipes. Isn't it great to be able to spec the bike exactly as you want?

See you on the road. Clive

That's a real beauty. Has the rear cowl been redesigned?
It looks longer and the rear light doesn't look inset as much. Or is that the way 2 up bikes always look?

It’s the registration period, I wanted it registered on a 2018 plate and that’s not ‘official’ until March first, it’s just the way it’s done here.

I wanted an 18 plate as it’s an aniversary model and the aniversary is in ‘18.

It’s a bit nerdy and sad, but I got a plate for it yer see that reads:

MY 18
CDO

“My ‘18 Commando” gettit?

Verdict amongst my mates so far is split 50/50 between that being cool or pathetic !!

Great idea!
Well, those who are in the latter group are probably just pissed they didn't think of it first.:D

Thanks for the compliments guys!

I’ve done a bit of fiddling this afternoon...

I fitted my precious left hand thread Allen screw to secure the front brake reservoir bracket and one in t’other side for the clutch and so removed the offensive mirror stubs!

A 7x5 Black and silver number plate is now fitted, only for show use of course, daft large legal one will be fitted when it goes on the road... unless I forget...

It’s a pity the carbon number plate mount was bigger than the small plate I fitted, strange feeling taking a hacksaw to ones brand new Norton! Still, needs must and all that.

I also managed to remove the ghastly fork reflectors, the black forks look SO MUCH better without them. Actually, the very first thing my Missus said when I proudly asked her to comment on my new P&J was: “what are those orange things? They look horrible”! They popped off very easily. Removing the double sided sticky sponge tape has left me with worn down nails on my sore thumbs tho!

Iridium plugs have now been fitted.

Next jobs:

I need to remove those silly warning stickers they put on the tank. Anyone got any tips for doing this?

Although the factory fitted LED indicators for me, I want to fiddle around with them somewhat. They put the front ones on daft long stalks, they’ll have to go. I may even change the indicators for alternatives, we’ll see.

I bought exhaust brackets without pillion pegs mounts, so will be fitting them.

The Shorai battery will be with me next week, as, I hope, will my Magnecor ign leads, I’ll do both at the same time whilst the tank is off.

I can’t get over how gorgeous it is or how fantastic it sounds with the catless link and shorties, it’s proper addictive.

Weather permitting, I’ll get a few short ‘private road’ runs in before too long...

Yep think that’s a good call no pin stripe at the rear, the 50th emblem is enough on its own, & the plates cool, with a bit of imagination the personalised plate s we can buy here can be quite affordable,& yep me being biased ,love the galactic black

To remove the running in stickers , use gentle heat from a hairdryer & turps to remove any adhesive left behind, only 21 more sleeps to go for ur first official jaunt

My stickers just peeled off real easy once I got a finger nail start.

You have the de-cat fitted already? Factory advised me to change it over at first service and they will remap it at same time.

Settling in...

Heh, you have the short pipes fitted already, did they run it in for you already, whats going on.

Looking at your first picture, have you just moved into that house with the sheets on the furniture or are you housing klu klux clan in your living room. Also, looks like a pair of bolt croppers above your bbq. Almost as bad as the chap who left the double ladders outside his gaff.

Nigel,
I know the feeling.
I bugged my dealer to become a Norton dealer and get me a 961 ever since I first learned that Garner was selling them in Europe 2010.
Had to wait until the first US shipment in December 2013.
My dealer called me when my 961 was prep'd and ready to pickup.
The next day I hopped a train to his shop - it was 28 degrees F and starting to snow.
I rode the bike home in the snow and freezing weather, but loved it so much I never felt a thing.
Fred, hate to correct you buddy but it was November 2013 when you and I met and you watched me ride my 961 which came with yours, Black Friday to be exact!
I took my reflectors off in the dealers parking lot with dental floss or fishing line, you may remember that Fred!

I have always removed those tank stickers OCD immediately!!! That is until I met several serious collectors who actually have gone as far as to buy gas tanks to get those stickers for their immaculately prepared restorations. Those stickers are worth a fortune to some people who know far more then I. If I ever sell that may make the deal sweeter or the second owner can remove them immediately, I recommend a hair dryer to soften the adhesive or park in the summer sun first, I've removed dozens with no problems!

Congrats to all of you with your new 961's.
As far as the cutting out (stalling), turn the pot screw on your right side throttle body where the throttle cables are 1/8 clockwise until it no longer dies. This screw is often incorrectly referred to as the idle screw. Idle is controlled by the ECU. This screw keeps the throttle bodies from slamming shut too abruptly before the ECU can establish idle. This must be done at operating temperature and if you go to far you may have idle issues when hot! This was discussed here extensively several years ago, do a search!

And what’s wrong with moving the bikes into the house? I had to cover the furniture to stop household dust getting on the bikes;)

They’ye tongues, not croppers, you would have to try very hard to do any damage with them!

Very nice! You even have the carbon chain guard...
Didn’t notice until now that they changed the design of the front mudguard. Me too, I prefer the old style!
