I made my first post almost 2 months ago about finding a 1974 850 Commando with 525 miles on it. Since I knew nothing about Nortons , I posted here and got some great advice. Since I'm 70 years old and have no mechanical ability some said I should sell it and others said I should keep it. I took it to my competent mechanic and told him to make it it safe to ride but keep original. I got the bike back a week ago it runs great. However I never will get to ride it. I still have two other bikes I can ride (650 V-Strom and BMW r1200c). Why not the Commando? I have cancer and have had a prostatectomy on July 31. I'm recovering nicely and hope to keep on kicking for a long time. However kick starting is out of the question. I put the bike on Ebay and posted a video of it running on you tube under Norton first ride here is the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5f9tDbTU7o&feature=plcp I had a $9000 reserve which has been met so bike will be gone. Norton I hardly knew ya.
Thanks guys.
Rick

That's a fine bike, a great find. You now are BOUND to find a nice MKIII Commando Electric Start and continue writing the next chapter of your life! Enjoy!

The Beemer doesn't have the same appeal as a Norton, but should keep you entertained.
Good luck with your recovery.

Don't let cancer deter you from having fun. The video I've linked to is of my brother Doug racing Dave Cotterell's vincent at Mildura a few years back. Dave was not related to us , but had the same surname. One of his vincents was supercharged. He found he had cancer in his throat, but still rode at every historic speedway meeting until he died. He allowed my brother to ride his bikes in the same races as himself. After one race he went missing. My brother found him in the ambulance tent on the oxygen. There is a message there for all of us - never give up. Do what you have to do to stay on the right side of the grass, and keep soldiering on.

Rick,
I have wondered a few times how you got on with the Commando. Sorry the story is a short one. Take care of your health and everything else will work out. The original comment about this bike probably fetching a high enough price to buy another with all the bells and whistles still holds true. You might be surprised at what you could find in a Mk3 with the money from this sale. Regardless, good luck with the recovery and keep riding!
